We had a Microsoft Update, at least I think it came from an update, and an icon appeared on our desktop. It said MSXML 4.0. What is this and what does it do? Also, do I really need it? What is PARSE?

There really shouldn't be any icon on your desktop from a successful update. What are the properties of that thing?

    Parse (from Webopedia):
"Parsing is a very important part of many computer science disciplines. For example, compilers must parse source code to be able to translate it into object code. Likewise, any application that processes complex commands must be able to parse the commands. This includes virtually all end-user applications.

Parsing is often divided into lexical analysis and semantic parsing. Lexical analysis concentrates on dividing strings into components, called tokens, based on punctuation and other keys. Semantic parsing then attempts to determine the meaning of the string. "

It is a nessesary file! But if the file is actually located in the DeskTop folder then it is not functioning.

When you get properties does it say shortcut or link?

Do a search to see if you have 2 identical files. 1 should be the file in windows system the other on desktop the shortcut.

If the one on the desktop is a shortcut then delete it. It is not meant to be run directly.

If in fact you have 2 exactly identical files (not shortcuts) then delete the one on the desktop.

If they are files but not identical then the properties will tell you which is the newest. So that one should go to \windows\system.

    In answer to your email!

    msxml

    Microsoft (X)tended (M)arkup (L)anguage

    It is html grown up.

Is used only by the Browsers and web related functions. It is needed by the system. But you do not run it directly.

You would also use it to develop web pages and etc.

So delete the shortcut from the desktop and never give it another thought untill you begin developing we pages.

    MSMXL

Thank you, MFLYNN. I am taking some computer classes but have a lot to learn. Can you now explain what html is? Some things I know but not the terminology. Also, eventually, I hope to do a very simple, repeat, very simple web site. What do I do then about Msmxl?

HTML is the language that web pages are witten in!

At this stage that is all you need to know or would understand.

When you go to a web page like this BBS it is an HTML file. Internet Explorer translates it to what you see.

Globoys - if you want to get a slight taste of HTML, I have a couple of pages I would be happy to send to you as text files. Just store them on your PC, change the name from xxx.txt to xxx.htm, and open the first one in your browser.

That way you'll have the raw html stuff and can see what it does and play with it. As I said, very simple code. I use them for my home page since I have not found an internet one I particularly like and these were hand written about 5 years ago. They work fine but don't have any of the fancy effects you get with java or any of the newer stuff.

If you want them, just send an email to me at nvail@ctc.net and I'll return them to you. May be a day or so since I'm off to Georgia tomorrow to visit a daughter and her younguns for the day but only the one day.
