What was the reason you started messing with registry backups in the first place?

    Why don't you have access?

If you don't have access to Control Panel, you're most likely fubar!
    1. Start > Run > compmgmt.msc
    2. On the left side, under Computer Management (Local) expand Local Users and Groups
    3. Right click Users and select New User

Arid I did a registry compression with tweating.. then I find system took ages to boot up: so I restore an old registry which I thought is the same before the compression. That's where I can't log in my 2 profiles hence no access to control panel

I am not a fan of compressing the Registry but it should be noted a Registry compressor is not the same thing as an optimizer and that one, in particular, is not a cleaner in any way. It does not add, remove or modify any data in the Registry. It just removes the blank spaces in the data base that get in there over extended periods of time when other programs (including Windows itself) change or come and go and update the Registry.

In fact, Microsoft published instructions on how to compress the Registry Hives manually in KB2498915. The Tweaking.com compression tool just automates that process.

HOWEVER, it should be noted every time there is a "major" update to Windows, the Registry is recreated, and thus already compressed - or rather, not full of blank spaces. And since major upgrades for Windows 10 come every 6 months or so, there is no "extended period of time" with Windows 10 - assuming you keep it properly updated.

It is time to realize Windows 10 is Windows 10 and is NOT and should not be treated like it is previous versions of Windows. If Registry compression was needed with W10, Microsoft would have put that tool in there.

Out of curiosity, I just downloaded and ran that tool on this W10 Pro 64-bit system.

Happily, it lets you just "analyze" and review what it finds before actually compressing the Registry.

    Registry Compressor.jpg
Note the difference between the current size (7.00MB) and the new after compression size 6.77MB). A mere .23MB (a whole 230 kilobytes) difference. No way is that difference going to improve the performance of any computer, even if using the slowest of hard drives. I exited without compressing.

Yea, I knew about that, but FuzMic mentioned
So I was more thinking of a registry cleaner type program...

Yeah, I was speaking to the crowd. Still, we are in general agreement here - it is typically best to just leave the Registry alone. By far, especially with newer versions of Windows, most "performance" tweaks do no good - or make things worse. :(

Of interest to me was seeing how tiny the Registry database was to begin with. Just 7MB! Even a very slow hard drive could seek out and read in a file that size in less than 1 second.

That's only your Current user registry, look above for the System Registry.

On my System Registry I would save 0.38MB (or 0.2%), my User registry 0.2MB (1.3%), not worth messing with.

Ah! Yeah. I see. Still I'm with you. Even if I look at the totals on my system, the total savings would be just .52MB or .4%. Not worth it.
