Why You Should Stop Using “Check for updates” in Windows 10

It's plain stupid on part of Microsoft to use its users as guinea pig without the users knowledge and/or authorisation but it answers my one question - Windows Update finds a new update when I manually click on it & not otherwise. This question had been vexing me for days.

Like I've said, again and again, the thing I hate about Windows 10 is that user control of the update procedures are non-existent (in the Home edition at least, have never tried the Pro edition) and please don't point out the ridiculous option to "set as metered connection". I've always done a manual search for the updates on the "second tuesday" to get it when Microsoft can do its thing without disturbing my work and now I'm being told that I get s-c-r-e-w-e-d that way too. I've only got one thing to say and that's "an Apple a day ..."!

No procedure is needed. Windows will search for and install updates automatically. Doing it that way (i.e. doing nothing yourself) ensures you only get the monthly released updates.

Ehhh, no. you will only get the monthly updates if you search for updates after the 2nd Tues of every month. Now I would just set WU to automatic, that'll give you the same, the monthly released updates...

Well, my point being that there's NO WAY to set WU to "manual". It's "automatic" and on several occasions, have I started the computer for a quick task and when attempting to shut down a few minutes later (to get going and take the LapTop with me), I'm told not to shut down because updates are getting installed (or whatever it says). I don't always have time for that but it eventually shuts down. However, when I start it again, I'm greeted by the same message, "not to shut down because uppdates are getting installed" and it p-i-s-s-e-s me off when I don't have the time to wait for it to finish. That's why I want to do it when I know that I have the time to spare.

Gee whiz. Come on guys! This is just turning into another Microsoft bash-fest. :(

Did anybody note the blog has been updated to correct and clarify what this is all about?

It now clearly states (my bold underline added),
My advice for those who love to hate Windows, use Linux. Seriously. Except for some gaming, there's little you can't do on a Linux box.

Why should this important information be tucked away in some obscure blog & not on Windows Update or on the web site ?

BTW, I use Linux also :)

OK, but it is only a small clarification... They're still part of testing...

Good question. But again, note this information (the VP's blog article and his source blog article) are both posted in the "Windows Insider" section and not in the open public sections. That, to me, is a huge distinction - at least until MS clarifies this.
Small but critical. It is almost like leaving the word "not" out of a sentence that changes the entire meaning of the sentence.

    Original: The man is Scrooge.
Corrected: The man is not Scrooge.

    A tiny, but critical clarification.

And who are "they"? Again, these blog articles were posted in the Windows Insider sections for users who have volunteered to receive "preview" versions of W10. That is NOT the general public. So MS still needs to provide more clarification as to who, exactly, this affects before - IMO - we pass judgement on WU or MS.

IMO, if there is any slamming of Microsoft that needs to be done here (for now), it is for them posting information sadly lacking in clarity and clearly without any secondary fact checking - so none of us or anyone else reading those blogs have to assume anything. Or worse, so none of us propagate misinformation, incorrect assumptions and/or false rumors. :(

o_O  :DThat's funny (in the context of this thread) as that comment reflects yet another example of zero fact checking or of any qualified editorial review at Microsoft before posting.

While certainly not the majority, there are ~300 million Christians in the "Eastern" world (including China, the Koreas, Japan, big time in the Philippines and more) who certainly celebrate Christmas and "the holidays". And many other societies have major celebrations around the "Winter Solstice" (which happens to be today, 12/21).

And while most of us understand there is such a thing as the Chinese New Year, and many Asian (or "Eastern") societies celebrate various versions of the "Lunar" or "Spring" New Year, the entire world still observes the "calendar" new year recognizing January 1, 2019 as the first day of 2019. I note the Chinese New Year starts February 8, 2019 but January 1 is still a public holiday in China!

This is also an example of how just one word changes everything. Only in this case, it was one extra word instead of one missing word.
