Have you tried the update without any peripherals connected to your comp?

Well, since it is a laptop, the only peripheral is a mouse dongle.

I also have a laptop but you can connect a Monitor/printer/extHDD/Cards etc.

Interestingly my daughter gave her Acer laptop to me to see if I could get it going for her.
She hadn't used the laptop for some months and it did not start when I tried the Power button.
I connected the charger and left it for about 15 minutes - then tried the power button again and it started OK.
It was stuck on downloading updates at this point
I opened Settings > Update and Security > and found it was still on version 1709!
I closed and did a Restart and it began downloading and installing updates.
I closed after each update had completed and carried out a Restart and did this numerous times during the next 4 hours.

It is now running version 1803 with all updates installed and will have to await version 1809 to be available.
I suspected a low state of battery was the reason she panicked about the non-start of the laptop.
It also appears that the battery may not be holding the charge (old age) and she will have to make a decision about getting a new battery

I don't think this is what is happening in my case. This is s relatively new laptop and I keep it plugged in much of the time. Interesting and useful information, though.

I finally bit the bullet and took the laptop to the Geek Squad. Of course they would not explain exactly how they accomplished it, but the laptop is up to date.
