I have been trying to update my PC and have been getting "pending download" messages for about a week now. I found that one could download Windows 10 update assist to ge things going. Well, I downloaded it and started it this morning around 10 am. It is now 5 pm and assist is stuck on 99% complete. Is this normal?

    Have you tried a Restart?
    Not a Shutdown.

Yes, I have restarted twice. It is now 8:30 am on day 2.

I ran the trouble shooter before, but will do that now.

OK I ran troubleshoot and still get the download pending message.

Identify the update that is not working, Try downloading the standalone version of the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog

When I ran assist, I got the message that I was running version 1803 and should update to 1809. Then I clicked update and that is when everything hung up again.

My PC is running 1709, but the troubleshooter doesn't tell me to update... I wouldn't. So is it the update to 1809? If yes, I would hide the update for now, and try again in a few months...

It wasn't troubleshooter, but Windows 10 update assist that told me to update to 1809. However, I am taking your advice to delay updating for a while. Thanks for your contributions.

Thank you, once again. I joined some time ago and just haven't had a need to ask for help for some time since I find answers here. I am a bit of a naive user and not a well informed IT. Perhaps someday I will be more able to contribute.

He's baaaccck. I tried the update on my laptop again last night. The first thing I saw was:
    2018-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4462919)
    STATUS: Pending download
I ran the trouble shooter, which had no affect.
I ran the Windows 10 update assist, which took a very long time, in fact, the entire game time last night (go pack go). It got to 97% by bed time, so I left it on over night. This morning it was stuck at 99%. I rebooted and opened settings. Here is the latest showing:

Thanks for your help and patience, Arie. I may give that a try. But, first, here`s what I have:
Laptop Version: 1803 (OS Build 17134.286)
Desktop Version: 1803 (OS Build 17134.345)
As a neo, I wanted to get the two to match. Is that unreasonable? Should I just leave things alone since the laptop is operating well?

Once I tried to force 1709 on my PC, it was a disaster. When I got it offered automatically by WU some 10 months later, the update went just fine.

My PC is pretty old (2009 build)...

So I would just leave it up to WU to update.
