When I power up computer, find that some HDs and USB sticks have allocated new reference letter with the exception of the C drive. I find this most applies after the MS monthly update.

This is common with removable devices - especially after a power outage. This is because they don't all come back on line and are recognized in the exact same order every time. Letters are assigned in the order the device is seen. That can change.

Bill, thank you for response. As you say there is nothing to prevent other than taking note of the HD new letter allocated as against the previous letter. Thank you.

You could unplug the USB devices you don't use every day too. What some times helps is manually assigning a letter to specific devices using letters higher up the alphabet, like V, Q, and Y.

If you have not given each drive a name you may find it helpful to do so - even if the drive letter changes the name will not and the drive will be readily identifiable - see screen shot.

To give a drive a specific name right click on the drive in File Explorer > Properties and type a name in the box at the top (alongside the drive icon).

FWIW I always designate X & Y to my DVD drives which stops the letters changing when an external drive is plugged in.

When format a DVD drive and USB stick, I have always given them a name for easy identification. This certainly has helped in the past as the code letter does change regularly but does not affect the C external drive and some USB sticks that are removed after each session. The two most affected are HD holding software and DVD player. I have taken note, the suggestion made by PeteC, to use the higher end of the alphabet letters X,Y, and Z, thank you.
