As in, I went through days of tedium doing a malware cleanup on an old desktop, then I started the the steps to optimize the thing as found in the How to Optimize Windows 10 tutorial.

I unchecked the unnecessary features and did the reboot, and since the reboot I'm getting a blue screen.

It does a partial automatic repair at boot, then kicks to a diagnostic screen.

It will not restore to the restore point, and nothing else in advanced options has worked so far.

I have not tried going to a dos prompt, but am wondering is there anything I might run from there that will get it to reboot to Windows?

    Suggestions?

    Hi basketcase.

From the Command Prompt in the advanced recovery options menu run these commands one at a time and then reboot the computer and see if the computer will boot successfully.

    • Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

    • ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

    • Bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

    • BootRec.exe /fixmbr

    • BootRec.exe /fixboot

    • sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows

    • chkdsk C: /r

    • exit

    Thanks!

    The first line ran successfully.

The second line did not run successfully.

When I ran the command ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old the message came back “the system cannot find the file specified.”

Via edit: My understanding is that you want me to run those in the order given, so I'm holding off on the rest.

Go ahead and continue onward with the next command accordingly.

Okay. I ran all those and made screen shots on my phone. What kind of report would you like?

Well after you ran those commands, see if you can successfully boot into Windows 10.

Thanks. I tried that last evening and it would not. It boots into two sequences.

First, I get the blue screen that tells me it is collecting information and that freezes when it gets to 100%.

After than when I reboot it goes to the screens that allow me to choose various options - troubleshoot, reset, restore, etc.

Restore shows two restore points so I tried a system restore and it failed.

Well then at this point, your only option is to back up all of your data and perform a clean install of Windows 10. I wish I could find another solution but the OS is too corrupted to repair.

See this link, How to Perform a Clean Install of Windows 10.

    Roger that. I understand.

Will I find steps at the link for scooping off the data that may be hidden in directories I can find at a dos prompt?

Another question: the unit was originally on Windows 7 Pro. Will that be a problem in terms of a clean install of W10?

You can access your data using another computer using this method here, How to Get Data Off an Old Hard Drive (Without Putting It in a PC).

No it won't be. Just make sure you remove all the partitions when you install Windows 10 again so your system has a completely clean slate.

Thanks. I’m off tomorrow and Saturday so hopefully I can knock it out.

It may be after the weekend but I’ll be back later to post an update.

Alright, I've reinstalled the operating system and am back up and running. Assuming it runs overnight with no glitches I'll start putting data and applications back on it tomorrow.

Are there any kinds of utilities I should run just to double check the OS install?

Make sure you install all the drivers for your hardware and ensure that Windows is up to date as well.

As far as utilities go, you can run CCleaner on the system and remove any extra startup items that you don't need running using that program to ensure your computer is running at its best performance.

Thanks. I'm posting this note from it and am starting through the drivers update process.

At the moment it seems like it has to pause and think about everything. At times it is taking more than a minute for the web browser to load.

Until your system is 100% fully up to date with all the drivers, normal programs, etc. there really is no way to judge how it is running. Very few computers run at lightning speed or can immediately begin a task without a second or two of minor hesitation. Give everything time to get back to normal and unless and until you have ALL drivers installed and turned on it will not necessarily run at what you perceive to be normal. Even then you really should give it a week or so to really see how things are running. You say browser takes a minute for the browser to load, well it also will not run 100% correctly until all drivers are installed and the browser itself is configured correctly. It cannot be fully configured correctly until the drivers that help it run correctly are installed.

Yes, I’m sure it is still indexing things so it can find itself. I knew this computer when it was a new Windows 7 pro unit and it was much quicker - even with just the factory 4gb’s of ram. (It now has 8 gigs).

At any rate, I’m installing Office on it today and will give it a few days as you’ve suggested. Hopefully it will work through that sense of being hung up on something as it loads applications or files.

Thanks, and I’ll give it a few days and then post an update.

It's not only drivers - it needs cookies to get established again.;)

Update: the unit seems to be improving daily. It still takes a while to boot up and some functions still pause before working, but I can see it getting better.

So I'm going to call the issue resolved and go back to the "how to tweak Windows 10" tutorial.

Thanks again to all for the assistance!
