While loading Nortons 2002 on my other computer in the middle of running my screen went to dark blue and the message says: dumping physical memory, counts up to a hundred then shuts down. When it boots again it does the same thing. I had to start in safe mode and cannot uninstall Nortons. Does Win 2000 not have a restore feature? Help! What can I do?

Welcome to the BBS! You only come by when you are in trouble! Smile!

Since you can get to safe mode do this.

Since you can not uninstall Norton do this:

Start-Search-Files or folders type Norton*.* to find. make sure lookin says My Computer. Delete all it finds.

Then do the same with Symantec.*

Then look in startup and delete all files referencing norton.

    Then do the below.

Go to run command and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1

on the menu it gives chose all options except compress

the angain the run command and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1

This will run Disk Cleanup in max mode.

    Then reboot.

You may get errors for a missing Norton file but at least it should boot. We can do additional cleaning for this.

    Oh I see!

Sheila try tagging only folders first no individual files.

Then get the remaining files only, or leave the one that will not delete.

They will go after we reboot once more to safe mode after removing most of the others.

So when you reboot hit F8 and chose safe mode even if it will go to full mode now. The get the rest.

when I try to do ctrl A to delete the files it wont delete any..because of the of the folders that wont delete, so I ask..<s> I have to delete the files one at a time? All 1800+?? Or just randomly pick some and reboot in safe mode and then try again (ctrl A)...

    Don't do a ctrl a.

Do not enter any folders just click a folder and delete it! Do only folders not individual files.

Get as many as you can and reboot to safe mode again and try the rest.

    Mike

I will be here so let me know when you want to quit. I am going out to eat after a while but will not be long. And I will let you know when I go!

    Try this!

Look at the locations that search found.

I know of 2 places they will be.

Then use MY Computer to browse to c:\program files\norton

then click once to hilite norton and hit the delete

if this works do the same with Symantec

if both of the above work do the search again and try to del what is left

Finally reboot back again to safe mode and confirm they are gone or try to remove the rest.

Sheila I am going out to eat! 45 min -1hr.

    Will log back in then.

If you get the files deleted and can get back to full mode even if it gives errors booting I can help you clear these fairly easily.

    Good luck

OK Nortons is gone. Rebooted and this what comes up:

    Unexpected_kernel_mode_trap
    Begining dump of physical memory
    dumping physical memory to disk

Then it counts up to 100 then it shuts down...sigh..never come across this problem..

Any thing else to try? And Ohhh thanks for all the help!!

    Hi Shelia

I will need to have you Download something. I hope the computer you are using to write to me is close.

    Norton cleanups

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nsw.nsf/docid/2001101612274407

    Registry and System cleaners

    RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

    EasyClean1.7 <http://gswi.com/downloads.htm>

    RegScrubXP http://home.carolina.rr.com/lexunfreeware

Download all of these put on a floppy and carry to this machine and install from the floppy.

Do not run yet. I will write directions while you are downloading and installing.

The Norton cleaners do not have to be installed they will run from floppy put both on same floppy.

Get down loaded and check back for directions.

    Ok!

    Directions

The 3 registry cleaners should now be installed and ready to run.

    so

    1. run the rnav from the floppy. Chose each item even though you may not have installed them. When it asks if you want to reboot say no or X out. After you have ran all selections then

    2. run symcln it may say nothing found. That OK!

    3. now reboot come back to safe mode

    4. Run RegScrub XP (regscrub finds problems) select and remove all. There maybe hundreds norton will be amongst them.

    5. run EasyClean, only unnessesary files and registry cleaner

    6. empty recycle bin

    7. finally the most selective one, RegCleaner. On the first screen look in the first 2 columns and look for Norton and Symantec click them if any. While here look for any other entries that you know should not be here. Like programs you had but removed. These are the dregs that did not uninstall. Tag and delete.

Still in RegCleaner click Startup list look for anything related to norton or symantec or again any other program that should not be there, tag and delete.

Finally still in RegCleaner go to top Tools-Registry Cleanup-Do them all. Delete all it finds.

Restart try full again. get back to me.

    Hi Shelia

    How are you guys doing.

I meant to tell you that the programs I sent in addition to helping to fix this problem will do wonders also in increasing performance and stability.

Even if you had no problem they (the reg cleaners) are good to run ocasionaly. Especially so at the first sign of a problem.

So let me know where you are in the process.

After all these are run there is one more step if needed.

Sorry I did not get back with you. Our Grandson come over last night (1 year old) and it was impossible to continue! <s>

OK this a.m. I copied to disk what you recommended. Except Easyclean, my floppys werent big enough for the copy. And Reg scrub would not run on his computer. We did manage to do some cleaning with the reg cleaner. But still it is doing the same thing. And after it gets to the hundred and shuts down the computer reboots to that point and it starts the dumping physical memory..it did this about 5 times before we shut the entire computer down. Don is out to get different floppys now.

    Hi Sheila

The EasyClean will fit on a 1.4 floppy if it is empty. Put a floppy in and browse to a: and del all that is on it especially a file called DRVSPACE.BIN.

    Then it will fit.

But you should run the RAV and SYCLN first directly from the floppy. They are small files.

    Have you ran them yet?

OK! I was hoping but did not expect it to boot yet anyway.

After these programs are run and I know we are clean I have one final command to run that should correct this problem.

I just am not taking any chances that something else will interfere with this, hence the cleanups.

OK, I tried to copy easyclean again and it said to use a higher density disk..still wont copy.

One other thing..out of curiosity I went into search and typed in physical memory and one of things that came up was:

an explorere icon then>> Memory C:WINNT 261,68 DMP File
Modified 1-19-03 11:26am; the time coincides with the last reboot then memory dump..
