I have tried to do the 1803 update on my wife's computer - PowerSpec Windows 10 Pro - three or four times in the past couple of weeks when prompted by the Microsoft nag. Each time it froze at the 100% complete screen but restored to it's prior state.

After another nag last evening I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded the Update Assistant and tried to run it. It stalled again after the 100% screen. I used the restart button on the front of the computer as I had in the past. However, this time it did not restore. When I power on, it splashes a screen like it is booting, goes to the second screen and does the same, back to the first screen and all goes black.

When I powered up after forced shutdown, I got this screen
None of the three options above works. The screen is frozen at that point and all I can do is a manual power off.

I made an image to an external hard drive before I started the upgrade and put the Macrium rescue disc in the tray (had to open it manually). However, when I power the computer on, the optical drive doesn't function. When I open the tray, the CD remains at the same position when I inserted it.

    Any suggestions.

Have you tried BIOS to set drive for DVD?

Seems to be a normal access to BIOS.

RL - Got to the BIOS and under the Boot Tab, Boot Configuration, this is the boot sequence:

    1st Boot Device [CD/DVD}
2nd Boot Device [Hard Disk : Samsung SSD 850...]
    3rd Boot Device [USB Key]

It appears that the CD/DVD is already selected. However, the CD/DVD drive still is unresponsive. I looked all through the BIOS settings and didn't see anything else that might be a clue. Any ideas?

Later Edit - I took the SSD out and put it in my PClone device. When I connected it to my laptop I was able to find and save all the data files. So that's all OK. Now to see if we can get it to boot.

Can you open the drive tray when the comp is powered on?
If so, load the disk and close the tray then shut down and Restart and see if the drive is powered up.

I can only open the tray manually when the unit is powered on - no response when I use the button. I tried putting a repair disk in and even after restarting there is no action in the tray. It is though it is dead.

I have a hard drive (operational) that was in the unit before I put the SSD in several months ago. I think I will try putting it back in and see if the CD tray is operational with that in. That may take me a couple of days. I went ahead and bought the spouse a new computer and am in the process of setting it up and transferring file. Will respond back when I try the old hard drive.

    Neil - Update.

Still working on moving files on to the wife's new computer. I did get the CD tray working again - the cable was loose. I probably knocked it loose while I was doing other things. I tried a Macrium image restore DVD that I had used once before but it would not boot and start the restore sequence. I put the Windows 10 Pro CD that came with the new computer. It did start to boot and gave me the option of continuing an upgrade (probably 1803 that had already failed several times) or a fresh install of W10 Pro. I tried the first option and it failed again. If I decide to try the fresh install, can I use the W10 Pro CD and when called on to insert the Windows key, use the Key for the old computer?

If the comp has had W10 installed previously, you will not have to provide the Product key. It will activate automatically. ;)

Enter BIOS by use of UEFI.
