Lately find that external HDs and USB sticks re-inserted into computer, Win allocates a new nearest letter available , whilst, HDs and USB sticks that are not disconnected retain the original allocated letter. Of interest to me, what is causing this to happen?

Thanks for response and help. Allocating a letter to one HD fails to remain permanently, after HD is disconnected and reconnected later, a new letter is again allocated.

Bill, yes thank you, it seems to refer to Windows7, as my current Win 10 1803 is of different format. I note on my computer that the main HD changed from G to F not a significant error, but the letter G is no longer showing in the list of letters available.None of my used HDs and USB sticks lists the letter G. This is not causing any difficulty with computer as a whole, other than having to remember what letter refers to which HDs - USBs stick. Bobby.

Hi Bobby, I'm flattered you seem to think I'm Bill, :) but you're dealing with Neil (the Lionhearted).
Yes there is reference to W7 but the same method applies to all Windows OS's.
It would be disastrous to change the method with every new Windows Version!
This is clearly shown on the link page upper right side.;)

Neil and Bill, my mix up is probably due to early stage of dementia and hope that you will both understand, thank you for pointing it out. I agree in what you say, changes on a regular basis to applications would be disastrous. Only in my instance it can be hard to remember what letter refers to what HD or USB stick, if changes apply.

Like I keep telling my brother - write it down on a pad - take notes and date them for reference at a later date.
I have a book with about a hundred ruled pages which I keep my Usernames and Passwords in.
I realized back in 2002 that I had little chance of remembering all the names and passwords I was developing and it taught me to take notes for future needs.
I also own a shredder to destroy the notes that are no longer needed.

I think that assigned drive letters work well as long as all drives have been assigned one.

Let's assume that the system has the standard setup, the OS on C:, the DVD-player is D: and all other devices manually assigned a drive letter thereafter.

Now, with no "other devices" connected and an unknown USB-stick is inserted, then it will get assigned drive letter E: (the first free one) by the system. If you don't assign a drive letter to it and let the "unknown" stay connected it will mess things up, should you insert the USB-stick to which you have assigned drive letter E: (which has been nicked by the "unknown"). I think that it will get drive letter F:. If you insert the USB-stick to which you have assigned any other drive letter than E:, you will notice nothing.

Now, if you insert all your "known" USB-sticks plus one "unknown" and restart the computer, then the "known" USB-sticks will get their by you assigned drive letters and the "unknown" will get the first free one.

Christer, in my case, Windows decides what letters will be allocated. If I decide to allocate a letter of my choosing, Windows at some point will change it. This has been the case for sometime now, to save further hassle, just leaving Windows to carry on regardless. At present, Windows has decided to allocate as shown : Windows OS HD C. Data D. Recovery E. HD (software) F. DVD RW G and USB sticks(2) I and J. Reading your setup, letters allocated in my case, all differ. If my lettering has to be decided by Windows so be it, other than that computer working reasonably well. One other point arising is clicking the letter to open certain HD or USB stick, now opens up ready for me to use, saves me from physically doing so.

Indeed strange, what causes this to happen not my doing, perhaps gremlins?
