I see there are not a lot of people posting here but I thought I would try. My problem is when I click to restart in Ms dos mode from the start menu it does not appear to run the autoexec.bat and not sure if it runs config.sys either. The reason I know this is because it loads the mscdex.exe from another location than the one specified in my files. After I installed windows not too long ago, I noticed there was a set of config and autoexec files with a .dos extension. I have read somewhere that windows can shift these files maybe for having several dos configurations one machine, or maybe for something else. Anyone know if it could be a virus, because I downloaded a lot of files to update my windows to .net 3.5 and have this old windows98 for running an old program. The last thing I downloaded was From brothersoft and it looked too large of a file for an installer. (Acrobat reader 8.1)

    Nick, welcome to this board.

brothersoft didn't have a very good reputation several years ago - Very harmful site brothersoft Avast Forum rated them horrible. However I didn't find any recent negative reviews. You might want to start a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum to let Broni take a look for malware. Be sure to look at Arie's "Read before posting" instructions ****** Read This Before Posting In This Forum ******

Running win98 SE which was installed first to master hd. Then installed XP to second hd. XP installed to drive E: when I was hoping it would label the drive as C: also. I think I had to switch the boot order to do this last time. Not to go off topic though, but, if you read the previous post, you will understand. Its right under this one.

You had both drives connected to m/b while doing the install?
I think if only one drive at a time was connected - you would get C: at install of the OS.;)

I agree. I have done a few with 2 HD and 2 OS. Connect one and do the install. Remove it and then connect the other one and do the install. Then put the other one in and it will/should ask you when you boot up, which one you want to boot to.

Next question is what if some one has two os’s and wants to cut loose of one (someone like me). I could just unplug or reformat one of the disks, but is there a way to restore the 1st os to exactly the way it was before. It looks like the boot.ini file was modified.
While I was experimenting and before installing the second os (xp) I installed bootmagic and made an emergency repair disk. I thought that may be worth a mention. At this point, however, I dont think restoring the mbr will restore the old boot.ini file. Can anyone confirm?

I'm rusty on W98/SE these days, but if my memory still serves me i386 file contains all the system files needed to fix problems.
