Semantics. A new version could be an upgrade or update - your choice. When all the t's are crossed and all the i's are dotted - your comp is up to date.;)

Yesterday, I had the corresponding batch of updates downloaded and installed.

This morning when I started the LapTop, after "settling down" it reported the last search for updates as "yesterday at 10:07 PM" but the update history revealed that definitions had been updated today. This confirms that Defender lives a life of its own.

I don't understand why there should be no distinction when it eliminates confusion? Any half-decent lawyer would shoot that reasoning to pieces!

I would expect Definition updates for Defender to be arriving ASAP as they protect my comp.
KB890850 is MSRT and KB4103721 is the W10 Cumulative update. I've also received them on my Notebook and main comp.

Checking my Windows 10 1803 updates find that Defender has updated each day from 19-05 to 25-05 showing successfully installed, each date quoting a different definition reference number. Is this normal or only applicable to me?

Very normal and definitely necessary for everyone using Windows Defender as their default ant-virus program. New anti-virus definitions are created and released daily at least with virtually any antivirus program in order to give users the most complete protection possible. If it were not updating daily then that would be cause for concern.
