Resolved Selective start up and defrag issues..

2 problums I am having.. 1 I can not run defrag while in safe mode.. I keep clicking it and nothing comes up.. and 2 it will only let me boot in selective start up.. I keep clicking normal boot but when I go back selective startup is clicked.. I have installed a new hard drive with in the last 2 months or so.. every thing is clicked to run nothing is turned off so not sure why it keeps going back to selective start up.. Any ideas what's going on ?

 

Hi jimbo0706, W10 carries out weekly maintenance on your system unless you have altered the settings.
If you want to run a defrag - it's not necessary to do it in Safe mode.
If you renewed your Storage - is it HDD or SSD?
Optimization is carried out by W10 automatically for SSD's.
If your system is running slower than normal then that will require a bit of investigation.

 

its an HDD drive.. but I used to run defrag in safe mode once a month with no problems..I can over look that but why does it keep starting in selective start up. ? It started doing that right after the spring update..

 

Safe Mode is a Selective startup.
Try RIGHT click Start > Run > type msconfig > OK.> Check Normal Start > OK Restart comp and see what happens.

 

I click normal start and as soon as it boots it goes back to selective startup

 

Do you have any service(s), startup item(s) disabled or set differently from what is considered default? If so then this is the reason for the Selective Start up.

I use Black Viper's suggested settings for Windows Services in order to optimize my operating systems, have for many, many years beginning with XP. This changes some of the settings for Windows Services which are considered default by MS and therefore sets the Start up to Selective which is then perfectly normal.

You might want to check this out for yourself. You said everything is "set to run and nothing is turned off" well not all Windows Services are supposed to be set to automatic or are supposed to run all the time, some of them are supposed to only run Manually, not automatic, some run Manually only when triggered by another service, some ARE Automatic and should run all the time. You need to check your settings for Services and be sure they are correct and also settings for various programs like your security programs AND also be sure you have correct drivers installed for your hardware, especially since you have a new hard drive.

I have not touched any thing in the service section. And every thing in start up is clicked to run.. I stopped touching things in serveses when I still had the old hard drive and started having trouble with things slowing down.. think I just made things worse turning things off..

 

Think you mis-read my reply, what I was getting at is there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Selective Start up. I have used nothing else since I got my XP computer in 2001, so 18 years at least. Maybe longer actually, I just cannot recall if Black Viper had "tweaks" for '95 & '98 or not. I believe that he did though.
His recommendations are highly recommended and respected. His site has been linked right here no fewer than 186 times on virtually every operating system section, plus others according to my count, as it is on many other help sites.If you follow his recommendations then you will end up with a Selective Startup and a Selective Startup is perfectly fine.

 

thank you every one for all the help.. I bit the bullet and after years of debating I bought an ssd drive.. Once installed and got windows 10 loaded I made it a point to see what my msconfig looked like and sure enough it was on selective start up new hard drive new install of windows 10.. so I went in and clicked normal start up rebooted and it was back to selective.. I will run Autoruns and get back to you with a screenshot..

 

Ok things just got a little strange.. Now when I click on normal start up it boots into safe mode..

 

And the reason for posting Autoruns?
I know you think that there is a problem when the computer boots into Selective start up but there truly is not. Selective startup just shows that some things that have been set by their program settings to auto start but are unnecessary so the user is allowed to choose that these will NOT be auto started. That is all. There are many things that can cause problems when auto starting or run unnecessarily all the time using valuable resources. By your Autoruns I see you have auto starting, CCleaner, SUPERAntispyware, for instance, both of which can delay the start up and use valuable resources all the time. Unless you run the paid versions of these two programs Auto Start is unnecessary, programs can be used as normal and when you turn those off and then you receive Selective Start up I say again, there is nothing wrong, bad or dangerous about Selective Start and as I said earlier I have used nothing else since I got my XP computer in 2001, so 18 years at least and have never, ever had a problem with it, including in Windows 10.

You need to check in msconfig and make sure that Safe Start is NOT selected

 

Even Omo post above my last 2 post asked me to do the Auto run and post a screen shot of it.. i was only doing as asked!!! Safe start was not selected and when i clicked on normal start up it booted me into safemode..

 

Since it was May 24th, 12 days ago that Omo asked you to run autoruns and you instead installed a new hard drive and I didn't see your post from today stating that you would finally install and run Autoruns. I am sorry.
I will stay out of this thread since you've never answered my question as to why you feel that Selective Startup is something bad. It's isn't. I am not talking Safe Mode either.

The issue was present after the new hard drive was installed.. But why would it boot you into safe mode when normal mode was selected and safe boot was unclicked ? the only way I could get it to boot into normal mode was hit safe boot and selective start up then it would boot normal..All this was after new hard drive was put in..

 

Have you checked in BIOS to ensure drive is selected?

 

Yes drive is selected..drive is 1st usb dvd is 2nd..

 

I am assuming that you have carried out Shutdown and Reboot after making the changes each time?
