Are FF and Chrome shown in your Settings > Apps > default Apps?

Frustration set in so I completely uninstalled Firefox and Chrome, cleaned up computer and reinstalled both browsers. Everything worked. Great but like all skeptics . . . . what was the problem?
Thanks to all who stepped up and offered assistance.

Since we don't know what you did when you say you "cleaned up computer" there is no way we can say. Doubt the removal/reinstall had much to do with it, UNLESS the browsers were way out of date because a reinstall of course would bring them up to date and that is key to keeping browsers running perfectly. I would bet the clean up is what fixed whatever the problem happened to be.
