It is sometime since last used Snipping tool, and have forgotten how to retrieve the saved file. How to post to an email or forum post. Assistance will be most appreciated, thank you. Bobby.

You retrieve it from wherever you saved it. If you don't remember, search for the file name you gave it. Or use the tool again and see where it wants to save your new capture.

As for posting to email or forum, it depends on the email program and forum software how you "attach" the file.

A 'snip' usually goes to Paint. Did you 'save' when closing Paint?

I just checked mine and it wanted to save my test snip to my desktop. So I assume it remembers where you last saved a snip to. Oh, and the default snip name is capture.png. So if you did not change the file name when you saved it, you might search for that.

As it is, I have no idea to which location it saved snip. I certainly did not refer to Paint. As did Bill, it would be ideal to save all snips to Desktop, making it much easier for me to find.

I don't think that was what he was saying. When the snipping tool creates a file, an application may be associated (file association) with it so it can be opened. I just clicked on a .png file and the Windows "Photo" app opened it. But I have the option to open it up and associate those file types with Paint too.

The Snipping Tool just creates those files. Other than adding highlighting to the snipped image, you cannot edit the image. You need another program for that and Paint is one.

If you enter .png in your start menu search text box, Windows should list all the .png files on your system.

How do you easily find the snipping image that has been made, best if found under File Explorer Documents.f

I already said. Search for .png files in your Start menu search box.

But in the future, it is best to designate your save location when you do a Save as. Then remember where you put it.

Bobby, when you next use 'snipping tool' it will show the snip on a page on the clipboard. Click on the Help on that page and you will see how you can use snip to your advantage.

rl thank you for information, noted. In my Snipping Tool box, the Help is shown as (blue/white?) by clicking it, showing how to use Snipping Tool.

When using the snipping tool you must tell the snipping tool where to save the image. This is not done automatically, it is up to the user to do it.
To do so click on the File option and choose the option Save as on the Snipping Tool window.
Give it a name and choose the file type and save it to your desired location.

If you do not do any of the above then once the snipping tool is closed the snipped image is deleted.

Hi jholland1964. When saving a Snipping do you mean -- A Web site page content (name)>jpg (file Type)>File Explorer (saved desired location). Is this correct? Thanks.

Ummm, yeah it does. When you first use the tool, if you click the archaic floppy disk icon, it will automatically select the Pictures library folder to save the snip too.

If you click File instead of the floppy as you describe above, you only get "Save as" as an option but it still will default and go to the Pictures folder - unless you manually change the destination.

What I meant was the user must actually tell the Snipping Tool to save the snip itself. If the user does not tell the Snipping Tool to save the snip but just closes the Snipping Tool then the snip is NOT saved. The user has to do one or the other, the Floppy Disk Icon or File, Save As, in order to save the snip. Otherwise the snip is not saved.

    That's true. Thanks for clarifying.

Note you can "Copy" the snip using one of at least 3 available options (clicking the copy icon, Edit > Copy, or Ctrl-C) and then paste it into a Word doc, for example, or some sites (like this one) will let you paste it in your post.
