Hi, I don't think this is the correct location for this issue. If not please move it. My wifes Toshiba Satelite S55-A5188 Win 8.1 wants to boot from media all the time. She has to wait for it to go through the searching for media and not finding it cycle everytime. I tried resetting the boot defaults in the bios but it doesn't work. I tried the reset options in the Toshiba hardware settings but they are all grayed, don't work. I have tried the administrator mode to no avail. I disabled secure boot, no difference. Any ideas anyone? Will a bios update installation correct this? Once again please move post if this is the wrong location. Thank you.

Hi kiaville. Have you tried ensuring that the hard drive is set as the first boot device in the laptop's BIOS? Are there any CD's in the CD/DVD drive? Have you tried unplugging all extra USB peripheral devices?

Its possible that updating to the latest BIOS version for your laptop might solve the issue, so if you have ran out of troubleshooting options, you can see if updating the BIOS helps.

    Hi Evan:
It appears to be. Nothing changes when I select it in the BIOS. That is why I tried to do a default reset of the BIOS. I am pretty sure it has the current version from Toshiba but I am going to run the update anyway and see what happens. I have been considering doing that but it is very difficult to pry it out of my wifes hands long enough to work on it. I don't have anything extra plugged into it, mouse and ac network adapter. The drive is empty. Thanks.

I will be closing this thread. I got into the BIOS. It is up to date. Will not let me rerun the update. Boot options are set to UEFI, secure boot is enabled. The Toshiba default reset worked. Discovered the boot options and the secure boot do not have a default setting restore capability. So I am stuck with the problem that led to this original post. Thanks.

Hi, I found my UEFI & CMOS settings in the Advanced tap, Sysyem Configuration, hit enter & you should get a choice of the two.

I am reopening this thread because the issue is still going and has never been resolved.

Update makes no difference. I have removed pc battery and cmos battery for several minutes, makes no difference. Boot order is set for hd boot first. The boot default reset does nothing. Is there a way to remove and reinstall the boot program?
