My daughters PC, running Windows 10. A Gateway FX6850, has 2 external sata HD slots that can be plugged in without removing any covers.

PC must be powered down to insert a HD into one of these slots. The MB sata connections are solid.
Neither HD slot will work. Have tried 3 different HD's. Two were erased then initialized on another PC, One has some data already on it - I don't know data is there.

I have tried removing both the sata connections from internal slots and tried them external to the PC.
Just so I was sure the connection to the HD was plugged in correctly and no bent pins present.

Under Control Panel >Admin Tools>Computer management>Disk management nothing shows as
far as the HD being present.

The HD plug ins are a single piece (power/data) and no spares are present so i can't swap to a
    different plug.

    Suggestions?

    thanks,

Do the drives have their own power supply?

I tested 3 drives at the club. All checked out ok. They were initialized, formated and partitioned.
Brought them home and tried - system did not see any of them.

The sata connection has both data and power plugins.

When a HD is plugged in and i boot up the PC, I don't see on-screen, the line that gives me access to the BIOS....

    Thanks,

Did you install an eSata card on the computer? Because I have looked at the specs for the Gateway FX6850 at a half dozen sites and according to what I have read that comp does not have eSata ports. I am not doubting you, I just find it odd that no site includes eSata in specs.

It's possible the external sata ports are an add on card and the drivers for it are not installed. Check Device Manager to see it the external sata ports are listed there.

Also, it's possible the upgrade to Windows 10 wiped the Intel chipset and sata drivers. It's an older computer and Gateway does not have Windows 10 drivers for it, but the Windows 7 drivers may work, else try getting the newest drivers from Intel.

There is no esata card in system, just a standard(?) sata connection looks like.
When i trace the wiring -
The power lines comes straight from power supply to a sata power extension wire, this is connected to
the external sata power plug on back of the HD.
The data lines are from the MB sata connection straight to the sata data plug on back of HD.

I'll look for the intel drivers//chipset.

    thanks,

OK!! That did it! Downloaded the intel driver and support assistant from their site.
Ran it. Don't know what it did but i can now see the Ex HDs.

    Thanks, a bunch, guys!
