Who to believe.... Norton says "Script Blocking" is (ON). When I check in SCU/Services Tab, Nortons "ScriptBlocking Service" status is (Stopped). Is there a way / view to verify what it's true staus is? How do I get XP to have service (Running)? Thanks.

You can easily test to see if you are blocking script from running.

Open a Notepad session, no entries are necessary, select File > Save As > browse to Desktop > and type test.vbs. Then when you attempt to open that file, you'll see if you get protected or not.

Or, if you want something a little more refined, copy and paste the following text into a Notepad session. Save it as C:\testit.vbs (or whatever you like but keep the .vbs)

Then when you double click it or go to START > RUN and type testit.vbs and press enter, you'll get the message telling you the status of you protection.

    +++++++++++++Copy the following script+++++++++++

    Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject( "WScript.Shell ")

MyBox = MsgBox( "Script protection is disabled unless you were asked to authorize this session ", 4096, "Finished! ")

+++++Paste into Notepad and save as C:\testit.vbs++++++++++++++

    { "@@@@@@@ "; "@@@@@@@@ "; "@@@@@ "; "@@@@@ "; "@@@ "; "@@@@ "; "@@@@ "; "@@@@@@ "; "@@@@@@@@@ "; "@@@@@@@ "; "@@@@@@@@ "; "@@@@@@@@ "},@),@,@,@,@,@,@,@,@,@,@@,@@,@@)," ")

    Hi Zephyr....
Sorry could not get back earlier, busy night. Tried your 1st post--- In notepad, create a empty file call "testit.vbs" path Desktop. Clicking on the file gives me a busy prompt for about one second.
Tried second test--- In notepad copied in your script, saved as "testit.vbs" path C:\
Then went to ... Start/run/testit " could not find file, BUT double click on file.. RETURNED.... Script protection is disabled unless you were asked to authorize this session
I then created a shortcut on the Desktop with "testit.vbs" routine for easy access test... thanks for that. Now we know windows is right / Norton is wrong... how do I enable script blocking?

Dennis, I recommend Scriptrap which is so simple to install and non intrusive that I can't say enough good about it. It's totally free also! It eats a puny 2.6k of memory and guards you from the bad guys constantly. You'll like it, trust me.

That proved that nothing was protecting you, the file executed without arguement. If you had some protection in place at the time, you would have seen some warning.

Since it doesn't come right out and say that, I made the other vbs script, it's much more friendly about communicating. :D

    Cheers.
ps, If you had input testit.vbs the file would have run from the START > RUN method. That assumes that the C:\ is on your path.

    Hi Zephyr
Thanks for the tip on "Scriptrap ". How does such a small program provide such a nice UI. One more question.. Can Norton script blocking and Scriptrap "Co-excist" without stepping on each other.... (Redundant wish). If I can figure out why windows will not enable Norton's request... ???

    Hi Zephyr

Reading ALL of the install instructings for "Scriptrap "..... NO can not have redundant script blocking. The one problem I'm having is linking Norton AV scan to Scriptrap. Neither of the following paths work.
    Norton AV (target path)_______________
    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\NMAIN.EXE" /dat:C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\navui.nsi
    Norton AV (Start in)_______________
    C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navw32.exe
Scriptrap "scan first" button is always grey out (Use your Testit.vbs to trigger Scriptrap). I can travel the long route.. Start| programs| NSW| AV| right click| scan file, which works... prefer to have the correct path installed into Scriptrap.

C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navw32.exe would seem to be correct since it agrees with what's listed in the Scriptrap Help file. Be sure you enclose it with quots since there is an imbedded space in the path. "C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navw32.exe" may just do the job.

You can also just browse to the proper location and Scriptrap will pick it up properly that way.

I use AVG so can't test Norton for you.

    :)

Correction, I just looked at my path statement for Scriptrap AV access and it was C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6\avgse.exe and works just fine even though no quotes enclose the path. As a test, I put the quotation marks before and after and guess what, It quit working. :D Go figure.

Anyway, if you open Scriptrap and click on "Program Options" then click the button with ... on it, you should be able to browse to the correct executable (presumably navw32.exe) for a simple file scan in Norton. The only think I can think of is you have a later version than Scriptrap referenced. You'll have to verify which executable does the simple file check in Norton perhaps.

    Post back whatever.

    Hi Zephyr

First I did a search on... *nav*.exe Wanted to develop a list... got 5 hits. Hoovered cursor over each, found description for "scanner module ". Browsed to file with ScripTrap and ended up with this path....
    C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\NAVW32.EXE
Scan First button is now available, works like a charm. Thanks alot Zephyr. Have a great weekend. :D
