Hey guys--I don't know of anyone knows of this--this comes from another site. Paul

I received a lightly disturbing bit of news this morning from long-time Gnomie, Raymond Fredericks: "Microsoft Premiere Support has informed me that they are in the process of retiring Windows update for Windows XP. Supposedly, there is no need for it, since updated will be installed with the Automatic Updates feature. If you disable that, updates can be individually downloaded from other Microsoft pages." I asked him for direct proof. He responded with: "This is a reply I got about personalizing Windows Update to display the updates catalog..." The official note read: "I understand that you are experiencing difficulties updating your Windows XP after the Windows Update Catalogue did not show up. I realize the importance of your issue and look forward to provide you the right assistance today. The Windows Update Site was recently retired." Ray added: "I called my MS Technical Account Manager, and he verified it. Windows update still seems to work, but who knows if they'll continue to put new stuff there?" Well, our (recently upgraded) message boards will definitely be aflutter on the heels of this informal note. Registered Gnomies have dozens of new options!

It's not going away - the account manager who said it was is wrong. I don't know if he confused it with the corporate update site (which disappeared long ago) - but home users shouldn't notice any changes in how it works.

Tanks Arie, I really didn't want any "Automatic" updates on my computer unless I picked them.

I like the feature, but also tweaked it my way

I've set it to Notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again before installing them on my computer

    That works fine for me!

As I said above, I'm still in full control. Basically I'm using AutoUpdate to tell me when there is someting, then I can check, and see if I want it....

Arie - you might want to load and try BigFix as an alternative way to find out about updates. It seems to find more and even find the M$ ones before M$ lets you know. And no auto-load but a click-on link. Easy to bypass those you don't want. And (this I love) you will be warned if an update will require reboot when done.

Hey Newt, or anyone else up to date on BigFix. I only found 2 hits on this BBS for BigFix, and this was one of them. I have been to the site, looks interesting, but does it work? I downloaded it to try out, but keep getting errors like "server is not available ", "action cancelled ", "page cannot be displayed ", and even from NIS that I was being attacked by BigFix. Just cannot get it to do anything.... Might be a case of firewall interference, but wondering what kind of experience anyone else has had with it....
