When a desktop at our house is on sleep, and the monitor is off, I wake the computer. I will, within a second, see the light on the monitor switch to blue (indicating that it is on), and the arrow signifying the cursor can be seen (and moved with the mouse). But the signal from the rest of teh computer is not displayed. I did this just now, and it took 11 minutes, 30 seconds for the log in page to display.

Yesterday I updated the graphics drivers. It did this again, this morning, so I don't think it is the drivers. The desktop is an older model, an HP Pavillion P6650z; the monitor is an LG WRT1952TQ. The monitor is 7 years old, but other than this seems to be working just fine. I believe the desktop is a year or so older.

Sadly, you didn't tell us what operating system you are using. :(

What has worked for me on my W10 notebook is disabling fast startup. See this and scroll about 1/2 way down to How to disable fast startup and give that a go.

It the issue didn't happen before the driver update - roll back the drivers.

Newer doesn't always mean better when it comes to drivers.

That desktop is on Windows 7. It is set to update automatically.

The issue did happen before the update---that is why I updated the drivers.

When I get back home I'll look up Bill's solution.

You can stop looking. Fast startup is not an option in Windows 7. It came with Windows 8 and later, I think.

Sounds like the computer is not in sleep mode but in hibernate mode.

I just checked. I deleted the hiberfil.sys file, and disabled the options to go into hibernation already (much earlier), so it is coming out of sleep mode, not hibernation.
