I have tried unsuccessfully to install this Windows 10 update. I get Error 0x80070005 or Access Denied.
I have tried to download SubinACL tool but the file says it will be loaded in ProgramFiles(x86)\Windows Resouce Kits\Tools but there is no such path. Is there a better way of repairing the PC to accept update?

I wouldn't rush into installing it right away. Wait for some time.

Which build number? The Media Creation Tool is 10.0.16299.15 released on september 29 (according to the digital signature). Is this the correct version or is there a more recent one?

To answer my own question, the date is misleading, that's the correct version.

Today, I let Windows Update download and install, it went without problems. Usually, I recommend downloading the MCT (the link in post #3 above), run it to create the installation media on a USB-stick, disconnect from the internet and run the installation disconnected. When done, reconnect to the internet and let Windows Update search for updates.

I suggest you run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

I updated my desktop and laptop today via Windows Update - on each computer the update failed - on the laptop with the error you posted. After running the Update Troubleshooter and applying the suggested fix all was well. I suspect that the prime cause of the issue was the update for Adobe Flash for 1603 - that downloaded and installed - then I ran into problems, resolved as noted above.

When I had WU do its thing, in addition to the "Creators Fall Upgrade", it downloaded and installed an update to FlashPlayer. I don't know if it was for "1603" but it should have been for "1703". After completion, all was well and I ran WU just to check. Another update to FP (for "1709" I assume) was downloaded and installed and again, all went well.

This was the first time I let WU loose to do a major upgrade (from one version to the next). I usually do it the "installation via USB-media" way because I don't like Microsoft "blending in" other updates with the upgrade to a new version. I also seem to be right because the update to FP was for the old version of Windows 10 since WU, after the upgrade to version 1709, promptly downloaded and installed the update to FP for the new version of Windows 10.

I consider myself lucky that all went well and in the future, I think that I'll stick to the "installation via USB-media" way which can be done off-line and adds no further updates which may complicate the upgrade.

My HP 1000 Notebook has just been updated with Version 1709 OS build 16299.19 - no problems and I'm using it to Post this.
Main comp running W10 Pro 64bit has just been updated to 1709. Both took about 1&1/4 hours to complete.

You seem to live a charmed life, retiredlearner!

I updated my HP G70 to Creators Fall Update and since then:
    1. Settings - Blank dialog - so cannot revert
    2. Menu: Only a limited selection and only if I right click
    3. A number of my program icons on the desktop deleted
    4..Edge: Blank dialog
    5. I have copies of system backups but am not sure how to revert to the previous version 1703 that worked perfectly.
    6. Internet Explorer deleted.

Do you think I have updated too soon, or should I not have bothered? How can I return to 1703?

I am also using the updated laptop to write this but thankfully I still my Sea Monkey Browser otherwise I would be on another computer.

Since you're "in a corner", try creating the installation media on a USB-stick and run it.

Run it off-line and bother about other updates later.

Use the link in my first post in this thread.

Thanks for the tip, but it would not have restored my laptop.

Okay, so I may have been a bit hasty. I gave up last night and had a day away from the laptop. When I restarted it it this evening:
    1: Edge now works
    2. IE is back but no icon on the task bar
    3. Menu is back
    4. I have been able to restore most of the deleted icons from my desktop
    5. The splash screen after booting up has been changed to a rocky seashore - where did that come from?
    6. My number formats in spreadsheet are ******* up - I have to change the number format before I can do a summation
    7. Settings are back but with a white on a black background
    8. All my bookmarks/favourites have been deleted from Sea Monkey, Edge and IE. My search engine has been changed back to Bing. Yeuk!
    9. I have had to go through EVERY setting and change them back to prevent Microsoft snooping - again.

I really wish that Microsoft would not change things. They just manage to screw things up. My laptop was working fine and to my COMPLETE SATISFACTION. Otherwise why would there be so many complaints after an update on the Windows BBS?

    Surely you mean MS update?
You can get IE on the Taskbar very easily by Start > scroll down to Windows Accessories > Right click on IE > more > pin to Taskbar. Done.
Did you have your work closed when the update started to install? My HP Notebook never had anything upset.

No, it wouldn't but it would hopefully have upgraded it to version 1709 and at your choice, left your files and programs "as they were".

retiredlearner - Yes it was the MS Creators Fall Update 1709. I found the link to IE and ran it. Within 30 seconds it crashed and restarted!!!????

Christer - Yes, I had 1703. That was perfect but as I always tell my clients 'keep your computer up to date'. So what is the difference between the downloaded version of CFU and the version created using the media creator tool?

All running programs were shut down. The update message said that it would take 1-1 1/2 hours to download ( I only get about 6Mbits/sec) and update so I went away and watched some TV. When I came back the splash screen (changed) was showing and when I logged in the message was that it was configuring windows and the laptop could restart several times so I left it again. When I finally came back it was in the state I have described in my first post above.

The CFU did NOT leave all my files and programs as they were - so that is another myth busted! It also messed with my keyboard - some US version I have no doubt. Yes it was. Surely after all their snooping MS must know I am in the UK and not the USA.

After a very long recovery session I have managed to reset my programs and desktop. However I hope that Microsoft do not have another update for a very long time.

Who is it who keeps on thinking that Windows is NEVER good enough? "Time for another 'improving' update, guys! Lets do it to them!"

    The important differences are that:

    - You decide when to download the upgrade. It should take no longer than having Windows Update (WU) analysing your installation and downloading the upgrade. Preferrably, you should do it before WU starts the automatic download.

    - You can (read: should) disconnect from the internet while installing the upgrade. This will prevent WU from finding and integrating other updates into the upgrade, which potentially may unnecessarily complicate the installation. (One example, which I noticed happening on a system during an on-line upgrade, is that it might download an update for FlashPlayer which will be for the old version of W10 and immediately after the installation has completed, it will again download and install the update for FlashPlayer but this time, for the new version of W10.)

    - You have the option to keep your files and programs or let the upgrade do a "from square one" installation which equals a fresh installation. You should have that option doing it online via WU directly (like you did) but you didn't get that choice?

    - When the installation, hopefully successful, has completed, reconnect to the internet and run Windows Update to check for updates to the new version of W10.

Thanks for the explanation, Christer. What I meant was the difference in the software and the resulting different outcomes. Now everytime I start my laptop, I seem to get a new set of background screens, the menus are totally different and now I have a spread of icons all over the desktop when I click the Menu icon.

Can you please advise me as to how I can restore the menus to something like the Windows 7 version. This spread of icons all over the desktop is awful, NOT awesome!

    You're welcome ... :) ... !

I'm still on W7 on my desktop which is my main computer. My laptop runs W10 which I use away from home (which is not that often), meaning that I'm still learning about W10.

There should be no difference between W10 version 1709 installed automatically through Windows Update compared to the "installation media way".

MS introduce a lot of "new features" in W10 with each new version. Among other things, the "background screen" gets upgraded but after logging in, the user selected background should not be changed by the upgrade.

On my laptop, I have cleared out all the "apps and gadgets" on the righthand side of the "start screen" which makes it disappear and I only have the dropdown menu to the left with the installed programs. On that side, I have uninstalled "features" that I never will use and it has become "pretty clean".

Go Google on "start menu for Windows 10" and see if you find something to satisfy your needs.

This is how it looks after "decluttering". In my opinion, there's no need for a "Windows 7 style" startmenu!

If it wasn't for the continual trying of this upgrade, I would just forget it but it is persistent in trying to upgrade. (Version 1703) All other updates seem to load without any problem.
