I use Thunderbird & I download the mail onto my local machine using POP3. Normal mails are moved to "Deleted" folder on Hotmail after I have downloaded them.

I have been facing this problem from some time now. I receive junk messages supposedly from Microsoft asking me to confirm my account or click the url to authenticate myself. Obviously all these are junk & phishing mails.

When I download them, these mails disappears from Hotmail account altogether. Can't find them in any of the folders so it's not possible for me to block them or mark them as Junk. Is it possible to send such kind of mails ? If yes, how ?

No. I can see all other emails except the mails that I want to mark as Junk.

Have you thought about blocking them directly on Hotmail's web site where you have tons of controls?

That's what I'm trying to do but after I have downloaded these mails, they just disappear from my Hotmail web site.

Never used Thunderbird, but is there a place in it to leave mail on the server like there was in OE and there is in Windows Live Mail? That needs to be done if there is.

When the mails are downloaded all other mails, except these mails, go into "deleted" folder on Hotmail web site. It seems they are employing some mechanism to delete themselves permanently.

Have you checked ALL your settings in TB Account and Options? cache space - time to delete email?

There is a setting in TB to leave the messages on the server for a specified period of time or until you delete them yourself. It can be found under the account settings, incoming server (or whatever it's called in English).

I had a look around the web in search of the answer to a different question; why has MS stopped providing updates to the Junk Email Filter?

I found this page which may have a bearing on your issue. If you scroll down a bit you'll find this statement:

POP3 users are probably affected the most by this as they won’t “see” the server-side Junk E-mail folder as POP3 accounts can only download from the Inbox folder.

There's more to read and maybe you'll find a solution.

Now I have set the time to delete to 5 days from 0. Let's see if it helps.

My problem is that I can see some junk emails & not others in my Hotmail deleted folders. I am not bothered if MS stops updates to junk filters. If I can "see" the mail, I can mark it as Junk.
