Belarc Advisor is a good choice for confirming whether an update is installed or not. Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer can be of help as well, although it may list missing quality updates if you have chosen to install security only updates instead.

And of course after inactivity the monitor shut off and when waking it up desktop is covered by the black screen again. What would cause the black screen over the desktop? It's not a bsod, cause she can see the desktop underneath it.

You mean a shaded screen? Or completely black except for the task bar?

Have you tried these search terms?...

computer wakes up to black screen - Google Search

EDIT: Maybe the PC in question needs a BIOS upgrade or a hardware driver upgrade.

Sorry took so long. So I went to her place and watched her work the computer. She had to wiggle the power button on the monitor to get to see the screen. The button has a short in it! Gave her my old monitor and everything shows up. Duh. Update issue still there but she wanted to go to Win 10 and give up on this one, so got her a different comp with 10 and she's tickled. While activating the new 10 comp had update trouble!! Finally shut off Fast Start and it's working. Off to a new forum.
    Thanks!
