Just a general question regarding usb vs serial modems. Is one better than the other ? And why. Having trouble with my internal so am thinking about purchasing an external.

I do not know about USB Modems but I can say that the two 3Com/USR Serial Port I was using had been on everthing from DOS to Win98 ME. At least five ( 5 ) different systems and HAVE NEVER given me a problem of any sort.

No install or Re-install problems with any of the OS that I have used.

The only reason they are not being used right now is that I am on a Cable Modem.

But it would take no more than getting an ISP account and 10 minutes of plugging in cables to get one working again.

    usb modems

I've researched usb modems & most work as claimed, slightly better thru put. If you are going to install winxp make sure the drivers for the modem are compatible. I'm running an old usr 56k in an isa slot & running winxp just fine, but my bro has a usb modem (generic) I it's a no go in winxp, unsupported, as is many OEM modems:(
