Too bad many will not believe the How-To Geek and will still insist WD is a lousy solution. Why? Because it's made by Microsoft. :(

Your right about that. I as well as my wife and several of my friends use it. Most will pull up somebody's comparison chart and say "See I told you it was junk" because it isn't on the top of the list. I have seen several of these comparison list and they are all different.

Yeah and it is really sad because those comparison tests are all artificial and synthetic. Despite what the testing sites and labs say, those tests do NOT represent real world scenarios.

All the 3rd party solution makers rely on good scores in those tests for marketing purposes so people will use their products instead of the next guy's. Even the free ones. This is so they can get more exposure to (1) hopefully convince advertisers to their products and/or (2) convince users to buy (and renew over and over again) their expensive Premium/Pro versions of their products.

So the 3rd party providers code their products to score well in those tests. Microsoft announced years ago they were not going to do that. Instead, they were going to code MSE/WD to be the baseline designed to thwart today's threats. Not every threat that ever existed. And baseline does not suggest junk or not good, bad or inadequate or even inferior.

Only Microsoft has no financial incentive for users to use their anti-malware solution, Windows Defender. Only Microsoft has the real incentive for malware to go away! Why? Because they get blamed regardless. Do the bad guys get blamed? No. Do users who fail to keep Windows updated get blamed? No. Do the "click-happy" users get blamed? No. Do Norton, McAfee, AVG, Avira, Kaspersky, etc. get blamed? No.

The 3rd party providers need malware to thrive! If malware went away, they would all go out of business! I am not suggesting the entire anti-malware industry secretly wants malware to thrive. I truly believe most companies (Malwarebytes for a prime example) are sincere in their efforts to thwart malware (at least the developers doing the grunt work are sincere). But they (primarily the bean-counters and execs) know too if malware went away, users would not need their products anymore.

I've said it before, but will again. You don't need to drive around in an Abrams Tank to be safe. You do, however, need to have a modern car and keep it properly maintained and with good tires and brakes. And most importantly, you MUST drive defensively. Same with computing and navigating the Internet (information superhighway). You need to use a modern OS, keep it current, use a good anti-malware solution and don't be "click-happy" on unsolicited downloads, attachments, links and popups.

I just got back from buying a new laptop for the office. The sales guy at MicroCenter was being a jerk about me using WD and passing on his $125.00 solution.

Bill - I came close to smacking the guy. I had printed out a page off their web site for what I wanted... I had handwritten Office 2016 Home and Office.... tried to sell me that... Then the extended three warranty etc....

To top things off, they have to introduce you to their sales manager... OUCH.

Probably dumber than the salesperson. :D I hate when they do that. I have walked out before and left them looking STOOPIDER than they are.

Sounds like a shady used car dealer. I bet they get a kickback on every extra they sell. $125 is ridiculous. Was that for 1 year?

Even Norton's top of the line Premium is only(?) $60/year - and that's for 10 devices.

That's another thing that is nice about WD. Because it is built into W10, it is not just for home, non-commercial use.
