    Tirbo Tax and IE 5.5

    FYI:

A little while ago someone posted re Turbo Tax automatically installing IE5.5 (a branded version). IE 5.5 is necessary ONLY to download updates to the program and newer tax forms FROM WITHIN the program itself and to activate/regesterthe program using an internet connection.

IE 5.5 is NOT necessary to download updates and tax forms from the Intuit Turbo Tax web site and activation/registration can be done using a toll free 800# provided on the activation screen during set up.

Turbo Tax can successfully be installed WITHOUT IE 5.5. I just did an install of Turbo Tax 2002 following the procedure I posted in the other thread here. (I use IE 5.01SP2 on this particular system and do not want IE 5.5 on it)

    Here is the procedure:

    1. Copy the files on the Turbo Tax CD to a new folder somewhere on your HD.
    2. DELETE the folder named IE.
    3. OPTIONAL: DELETE the Acrobat folder to retain your current version of Acrobat Reader. (Turbo Tax will install Acrobat 5.x)
    4. Run the Setup.exe program by double clicking it.
    5. Click OK/Continue when prompted about IE 5.5 not being found.
    6. Proceed with installation and move on to the following steps when prompted about IE 5.5.

Installation will succeed. You can download any program updates or newer tax forms from the Turbo Tax web site. You will need to open your browser and type the URL, you will not be able to use the shortcuts to URL's from the Turbo Tax program menus.

Currently, there are no updates to download.

Thanks for that information. After all the hype about Turbo Tax installing CDilla which will disable the CD-RW drive I want to install it on my old computer which has IE 5.1 sp2 and just a plain CD Rom. I was planning on upgrading to 5.5sp2 from a saved disk but now I won't have to.
