For some strange reason, every single time I restart my Windows 10 laptop, I see a red x over my wifi icon. It stays there until I reboot a second time. Then, after the second restart, it works fine without any tinkering--at least until the next restart. I'm not sure if this is the case with a shutdown and cold start. This is a little annoying. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot?

That was good. I did fix it. OK I'll go through the support page and see what works, what doesn't.

Sorry for not getting on this sooner. Been busy this spring.

OK when I get that red x, the Windows troubleshooter just tells me there is a cable that is not plugged in--as if it can't even see that I have a problem with my wireless.

I have downloaded (what I believe to be) the latest wireless driver, but running the installer, it says that the driver that is already installed is equal to or later than the one I'm trying to install.

I'm really not sure why a reboot would suddenly make my wireless work....

Hi Paul, Right click on your WiFi icon in Systray > left click on Open Network and Sharing Center > click on Connections > Wireless Properties > are the checks in the boxes you want? Did you use the Diagnose on the WiFi Status page?
Have you tried in Device Manager > Network Adapters > your adapter and Double click > open Events?
Right click on your Adapter > Uninstall device > Shutdown laptop > Boot again to let Windows find and install again?

The only box I have checked in the "Wireless Properties" (if I am looking at the options you are talking about---I didn't see the path you mentioned) says "Connect Automatically when this Network is in Range."

I went to the status page for my wireless network. The troubleshooter there (I had in fact used it on a different page) couldn't find anything wrong at all.

I'll go do the device manager & adapter solutions, then report back.

The last Event listed in 16 March, when I tried to install something. The events from 16 Mar (the others were from the previous year) were saved in an evtx extension. Not sure what to do about that one, but it is on my desktop.

OK I think we got this one solved! I went into the device manager and unisntalled the device, then booted again and windows was able to see it. I had to re-enter my password, but I suppose that is normal, givne that I had just uninstalled it previously.

To make sure, I rebooted twice again, and each time, I was able to get online, so that must have been the solution.

Thanks. I'll mark this as solved until I see this again. I don't recall the last time I got through 3 consecutive reboots, with my wireless working each time.

Nice to see you have got your WiFi working again. ;) There must have been corruption in the Registry causing the necessary Reboot to get it going.

I really don't know---what could be resolved by continually rebooting? And if a reboot did solve it, why didn't it stay solved? Strange.

Oh well. Its working properly now, and I rebooted again today just to be sure.
