When Win10 was being offered for free I installed it without any bother at all onto my Win7 laptop. I was quite pleased with the result.

I decided, therefore, to install it on my Win7 desktop machine. However, after several failed attempts where it progressed no further than 80% or so I decided to call it a day and returned to using Win7, which I've done to this day.

I do notice after all this time that every now and then a message pops up telling me that an attempt to install Windows 10 has failed (Error C1900101-4000D). I don't know why I'm getting this message regularly since I've not tried to install Win10 since it was available for free last year.

I'd be quite happy to have Win10 installed but couldn't be bothered to endure another series of failed attempts. So, since I'm happy with Win7, how can I stop Windows trying to install itself on my Win7 computer?

    Thank you.

Hi Lugwalker, lj's link will still enable W10 install. As I read your Thread - you are happy to remain with W7?? The quote above should REMOVE the updates that try to install W10.
As I understand it, you will need to remove any trace of W10 Upgrade or you will keep getting the Error (C1900101-4000D) showing.
If you wish to install W10 - then follow lj's link in detail. These problems with W10 installs are due to corruption of files, 3rd. party AV's and outdated drivers. Clean installs seem to work OK.

Hi Lugwalker. You could try just performing a clean install of Windows 10 which will allow you to get your Windows 7 system upgraded without carrying over any junk programs or files that you won't need.

Is that something that you want to do or are you determined to try and upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 without losing any data?

Thanks, retiredlearner. I thoroughly - several times - searched Installed Updates for the three updates you mentioned but only found one of them (KB2952664). Perhaps I had removed the missing two in previous attempts at doing the procedure. I uninstalled KB2952664, followed the list of instructions down to 'ok' and rebooted. Now let's see if I get W10 trying to install itself over the next few weeks.

Thanks, Evan, I'm happy to remain with Win7, but I presume that if I wished to upgrade to W10 that I'd now be paying the full price for it? If I did that and chose to keep all my data, would I still encounter the previous problem I had in trying to install it? Is that why you suggested a clean install?

Thanks for the link, lj, for the link. I'm reviewing the article again.

Everyone should have some kind of backup of personal files. If you have, I see no problem just doing a clean installation and when done, reinstall programs that you still need/want (if compatible with Windows 10) and finally, copy your personal files from the backup to their proper location. If you have no backup, step one should be to get an external HDD and back up your personal files to it.

You can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free by following the instructions in this link, You Can Still Get Windows 10 for Free With a Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 Key.

It depends on what is causing that error message but if you are going to keep using Windows 7 for a while then I would look at addressing that error message where Windows 10 does not want to install before you upgrade to Windows 10.

Yes because I don't know how much junk you currently have on your system and upgrading to Windows 10 by doing a clean install will allow you to get a fresh start with Windows 10 so your machine will run more smoothly versus upgrading from Windows 7 and keeping all of your programs and settings in place.
