Most often when I shut down WINXP, I get this message:
    END PROGRAM - MESSAGE APP
This program is not responding. To return to Windows and check the status of the program, click cancel. If you choose to end the program immediately, you will lose any unsaved data.

Does anyone know what causes this? And what I can do to eliminate it? Thank you.

I bet you got a Dell. If so, MessageApp is a little phone-home applet they put in for some reason. Per Dell, it is supposed to do good things for you. Some users Don't Agree

I've been having the same experience, although not so frequently, maybe once every 8-10 shutdowns. And yes, I have a Dell. Is there a solution to the problem?

I tried to check out your link, Newt, but Dell's site doesn't support my browser (NS 4.79), so I don't know what is said there or if a work-around is mentioned or not.

    Others having the same experience?

Bobbo - I extracted the contents of the link (a forum thread) and have it as text only. Be happy to email it to you as text in the body of post. But you haven't listed an email address on here so no joy just now.

If you want to send an email to nvail@ctc.net, I'll put it in a reply to you.

Newt: Received your e-mail. Thanks for going to the trouble to edit and send the text.

I've noticed that the occasional hangups I have during shutdown seem to involve a conflict with Ad-Aware but that they're most likely to occur after I've dumped some e-mails into Netscape's (v4.79) Trash file. And emptying that Trash file just about guarantees the hang. Odd that there would be such a combination: Dell computers using Ad-Aware and NS.

Removing the Dell support file is a fix of sorts. A better solution would seem to be Dell releasing their promised revised version that would allow continued software support but wouldn't cause the current hanging problem. Any word on when they'll do that? Or how Dell owners will learn of its release?

Haven't a clue when Dell will do the release or how they will let you know.

Maybe that annoying kid they had doing commercials for a while will visit everyone. The interns are bad enough but he had really gotten old.

Anyway, you now have more information to go on.
