I am on Windows 10 and have been using Malwarebytes for a number years now. I recently updated Javascript and must have missed the button to not install Norton. I am now getting a popup where Norton keeps asking if I want to install. I click cancel and it goes away ... for a while.

I have done a number of searches for Norton and Symantec and deleted everything that is found, but the nagging persists.

Does anyone know how to stop this permanently?

Hi jshaw42. I would start with running the Norton Removal Tool and see if that removes all remnants of Norton that are on your system.

Thanks, I actually did a version of that. I let the nag install Norton, then uninstalled it. Boy, did I learn a lesson.

Can you post a screenshot of the message? What kind of popup is it? Is it a website popup or a notification in the system tray showing you a message about Norton?

Oh? You sure it was not Java? In spite of their similar names, Javascript and Java are two totally different things. And the fact is, most users don't need Java any more and because it is constantly plagued by critical security issues, most security experts recommend you uninstall it, or at least disable it. If some program you use really does need it, you will be prompted to install/enable it again.

As for Norton, see if this helps: Message: "Install an updated version of your Norton product for Windows 10" appears repeatedly on my computer

It was Javascript (I feel certain). Here's the screenshot:

Just tried Bill's suggestion. Will now wait to see if it reappears.

After Bil's suggested route, I got a new message that I do not understand, since Norton has been "removed" already.

The thing is, Javascript is a runtime or object oriented language used by programmers and developers. It is commonly used by website developers. There is no reason for non-programmers to download or use it.

And you don't see Norton Utilities 16 in Control Panel > Programs and Features?

Do you have CCleaner? In there under Tools > Startup, you can see what is started with Windows, and disable or remove it.

I used Ccleaner twice to eliminate the Symantec and Norton entries from start up and restarted. Each time, the damned pop-up is still there. Not only that the Symantec and Norton entries are back in start up. This is really getting aggravating.

Between what Evan and I suggested, I don't know what else to suggest. I found this on the Symantec forums where some believe it has to do with Adobe products. It also seems Norton created a KB on this as peterweb noted on the second page of that thread.

Do you see any Norton or Symantec entries in the Uninstall a program list in Control Panel?

Lets try this. Download Process Explorer and open the program when that Norton popup comes up and if you hover your mouse over a process, it will tell the file path where that process is originating from. See if you can identify what directory that process is launching from and remove those Norton files from your machine manually.

Will this show me more than my previous searches in regards to Symatec and Norton?

I downloaded and opened the zip file. It appears I wil have to go to the folder and open the 64bit version when the popup appears.

Yes. Just run Process Explorer when that pop-up appears and you should be able to figure out where that Norton process is coming from.

I do not know it this will work. Did you try performing a System Restore?

Got information directly from Symantec that solved the issue. Plus, Malwarebytes helped clear things.

    System restore was not necessary.

Symantec has two programs, Norton_Removal_Tool.exe and NortonRemediationRemover.exe and instructions for use on their web site that I think were the final solution. I also updated Malwarebytes to premium. That version contains a ransomeware protection and an exploit protection. I am too much of a neophyte to explain or even understand how it worked.
