Downloaded ISO for WIn10 from Download Windows 10 Disc Image (ISO File) . It states it is for Home or Pro, but it will not ask which I want and installs Pro. I did check the md5sum and it is correct.
I do boot in EFI mode and make the boot-able USB stick by haveing a fat32 first partition, mount the ISO and copy the contents to the usb.

I do have a multi boot system with Win10 home, Win10 Pro and 3 different linuxs. I did change the EFI partition type for the Win10-Pro to that of a linux partition and wrote 0's to its first sector (no way for the Win10 installer to see the win10-pro system and decide that I must want Pro), also tried deleting the EFI Microsoft folder before trying to install, to remove all traces of Pro.

Just how does one install Win10-home ? It does install wIn10 pro just fine.

Did run 2 commands on the usb /install.wim. posting just a snipit of output.
    C:\Windows\system32>dism /Get-Wiminfo /Wimfile:d:\sources\install.wim /index:1
    Index : 1
    Name : Windows 10 Pro
    Description : Windows 10 Pro

    C:\Windows\system32>dism /Get-Wiminfo /Wimfile:d:\sources\install.wim /index:2
    Index : 2
    Name : Windows 10 Home
    Description : Windows 10 Home

How many Licenses do you have? The FREE upgrade time has expired. From the Chart provided in the MS Download Window - Windows will install what you were upgrading from.

It will install the version for which you have (& enter) the product key.

Computer came with Win8.1 'home' and it does have registered installs of Win10 Home and Pro. At no time does it asks for a product key or option for Home or Pro. I boot up the install program , it will ask if I want to install or repair, I select install- it then ask me to accept the Agreement-- it ask what partition to use- then it installs Pro. (it does ask for name/password ect.) Doing the install I am NOT on-line.

I did upgrade from the pre-installed win8.1 to Win10-home a year ago. For Win10-Pro used a different way . If it installs depending on the key in firmware, it should be installing Home not Pro. (I did download and made the bootable USB with Linux. I made changes to the hdd so the installer could not see that win10-Pro was installed, it would only see my Win10-Home install)

updated: The pre installed version was Win8.1 with bing, upgraded to Win10-Home.

If you upgraded from W8.1 a year ago, there won't be any "old" files available to refer to as Windows removes them after a period. If I remember it's 31 day period after install and cumulative Anniversary update will definitely remove them.

I guess that I was not total clear on the problem. I am trying to do a clean install of win10 Home. When I boot the usb with Win10 install files , it will auto install win10 Pro , no option for Home and it must detect the embedded key (it does not ask for a key).

I did download Win8.1 core iso, enabled the install to read the embedded key from my ASUS laptop. After it installed , activated win8.1 core then put my win10 iso usb in and ran the setup file, it did upgrade to win10 Home and activate.

So the question is how do I do a clean install of Win10 Home ? If I try, it will install Pro. The embedded key is for Win8.1 core not pro.

Your Win 8.1 'core' must be Home Edition. I had no trouble installing W10 Home 64bit as the upgrade from my HP Notebook with W8.1 Home 64bit. I used the MCT to download and burn ISO to DVD and had no problems installing to SSD. The same should apply to USB install. As I understand it, the MCT ISO detects whether your 'core' is Home or Pro then installs the same OS. I cannot explain why you have the problem.

Try this: If you've created a bootable Windows 10 Home & Pro install USB thumbdrive, in the Sources folder save a file called ei.cfg. In this file enter:

    [EditionID]
    Home
    [Channel]
    Retail

[Channel] must be either "OEM" or "Retail".

Thanks all. Arie-- I used "OEM" and now it asks if I want Home or Pro. They both will install and activate.

Good to hear we got it fixed! I'd usually hear people having the reverse problem ;)
