This one is similar to the thread on the 'missing hard drive' In this case, I upgraded my PC from Windows 95 to 98 using the 'clean sweep', new installation method. I have two hard drives and I backed up the stuff I wanted to keep on the slave drive, which was then disconnected to prevent inadvertent formatting. I was told (by someone I thought was quite PC literate) that this offered me an easy way to install Windows 98 without losing any keeper files. Well, 98 is now installed, and though the drive shows up in the CMOS (BIOS) settings, it is not recognized by Windows. No drive letters are showing up, nor can I get DOS to recognize them. I understand that using FDISK and Partitioning will make the drive usable again, but is there any way that I can recover this data? :(

    Reading slave drive

:p In case any of you were thinking about this one, I solved it. A bootable disk that came with the slave drive (a maxtor), happened to have a disk BIOS utility program from which one can remove the EZ-BIOS and let the disk use the resident ROM BIOS (which in my case must have been different). After changing to have the disk use the ROM BIOS - success! All data on the disk were saved. :p I hope this might be of some use to anyone with a similar problem. I can e-mail a copy of the floppy disk utility.
