When I plug any portable drive into the either one of the 2 front USB ports on my desktop, the computer goes into Recovery mode stating Your PC needs to be repaired. When I plug any other devices (mouse, printer, etc.) into those ports, it starts fine. When I unplug the drives, the computer starts normally. I also have another portable drive plugged into the back of the computer. It does not send the computer into repair mode.

The portable drives have been plugged into those ports for at least 18 months but only within the last few days has this started happening. Nothing on the drives has changed in that, I have not added an executable file to the root of either one.

I use SyncBack Pro to backup daily to one of the devices and that has worked flawlessly.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

I would look in the BIOS and make sure the Hard Drive is the first boot device.

As it happens, the 1st device was set to USB Key however, that has been the situation since I installed Win 10 many moons ago so, the question is, why would it all of a sudden try to boot from a device that was always plugged in?

I have changed it to the optical drive and it starts as it should with the drive plugged in.

Why not start your comp from your HDD?

I could. I was hoping that someone would have some insight into why it started misbehaving after so long. Maybe it will just have to be one of those confounding things.

What recent changes have you made? Software installs - Hardware added/changed? Other than that, a recent update may have been the cause. You should always have your BIOS set to start from HDD to eliminate any problems. If you need to set for USB or ROM drive - return it to HDD once the need has gone.

I would say the opposite: It finally started behaving as it should. If you set your Boot device #1 to USB and there's a drive attached to USB, it should try to boot from it....

Haven't made any changes or added any software so, I am just going to take it as an unexplained occurrence. I have set the start to HDD

    Thanks for the input

This problem has a new life. As I indicated, I set the first startup device to the HDD - see screenshot - and plugged the backup drive into one of the front USB ports.

On starting the machine this morning, it went into the Your PC needs to be repaired mode. When I removed the backup drive, it started normally.

    Thoughts anyone?

What is on the portable drive? It sounds like it almost might be a bootable drive and the system is choking on it.

The front USB ports may not be powered USB ports while the rear ones may be powered. Also, are they USB2 or USB3 ports? Sometimes simple differences can cause Windows to react unconventionally.

Your comp should have a BIOS boot menu via an F key. Try that menu with the drive connected, select the HDD and see if Windows boots.

I can start the machine by choosing the drive through F12. Have always been able to.

The original question was, before a point in time within the last month, this started happening. This has never been an issue before this point and with nothing having changed on the computer or the drives that are plugged in, why did it start to happen? Why, when the BIOS is set to start from the HDD, does it continue to happen? Notwithstanding the insight that everyone has provided, for which I am grateful, these are the burning questions that I doubt I will be able to answer.

It's very possible the change is a result of a Windows update.
