Something strange when Windows updated today..Whenever I click on a desktop icon, the address that is put into Chrome is not correct.. The only way I can open a App is cut the address from the shortcut properties and then paste it into Chrome..I've checked all Chrome settings and can find nothing pertaining to this (In reality, I don't know what I'm looking for).Has anyone experienced anything like this and if so..what's the fix.
    thanks
    .

I would reboot first. If the problem is still there, I would uninstall Chrome then reinstall it. I am assuming this is only happening with Chrome and not IE or FF or Edge.

This is what I get when clicking any desktop icon :file:///C:/Users/jb/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/INetCache/IE/KTT1JAM3/jerryb[1]
This or similar appears in the Chrome URL line...I have deleted everything in the "INetCache" but no joy..The address in the properties of my Icons just do not go to the URL Line !!!

I don't really know what to suggest here. I found several similar cases, but none recently and no one solution to fit all cases. One suggestion was to make sure you country location was correct.

I've been trying to look for a solution but couldn't find one, have you resolved this? Another reason to hate Windows 10

    Hi B.
Yep..On most sites this is still happening...on the ones I use most, I've set up a macro in my programnable keyboard (using the same URL that's in my shortcut) and it works fine...and
as I've said everything works ok if I use the #$%$# EDGE browser.

Why is this Windows 10's fault?

    Hi B.,
This just started happening a couple of windows 10 upgrades ago..Did work fine, so I assume MS has changed something that will not allow a URL(from a shortcut) to put in the address line of Chrome. Transfers ok to EDGE.

Have you tried going to a site then dragging the url from the address bar to the Desktop so as to create a new shortcut? Bear in mind that shortcuts made using IE are proprietary and won't work in other browsers.

Yep, That didn't work either..Unless some "bright " person comes up with a solution I'll bite the bullet and not go to those sites..Edge is a no no for me..is very slo
and won't open some of the flying sites I visit. It's a shame Microsoft has to do something like this to force one to use a inferior browser.

Wife uses nothing but Edge. I used it for a while but didn't like it's profile. We have NEVER had it not go to a site. You are not forced to use it at all. IE is still a part of Win 10 and always has been.

    Hi MB,
I have no problem with EDGE or IE..It's when I try to use CHROME (which I've used for years) That this problem happens..Don't want to use edge or IE.

    hi r.
Thanks..none of these worked..Did find that if I typed the (icon properties) address into the chrome address bar all worked as it should..It will just not transfer properly when the Icon is clicked..
I always get a entry in the chrome address bar starting with "C:///file/user ect ect ect
