I keep trying to move files from my win7 computer to my win10 computer. Unlike the 10 to 10 scenario, I get asked for a user name and password. I have tried all kinds of password and cannot figure out what the hell it's asking for.

We don't have enough information. What kind of file? You really should not be asked for any password to simply copy a file. To open that file could be a different story.

What you should do is "copy and paste". "Copy" the file from the W7 computer and "paste" it on the W10 computer. Once you are sure the W10 copy is good, then delete it from the W7 computer. Copy, paste, delete is really what a "move" is.

Note too you cannot simply copy and paste (or move) a "program". For example, you can move a Word document and the document will be completely usable. But you cannot move the program Word. This is because the program must be "installed" to be properly registered in the Windows Registry for Windows (W10 in this case) to know how to "run" it. So if you are trying to move program files, you really should just re-install the programs on to the new computer.

Note we cannot help you by-pass any password because we have no way of verifying you are the rightful owner of that computer.

The Windows 10 computer probably is using Homegroup for file sharing, amd possibly the Windows 7 computer as well. Thus you will have to copy the file to the Public directory. Any other location will initiate a credentials prompt.

Are you saying if you are on and using the W7 computer, and you try to copy a file, it prompts for a password?

Is the user name & password same on both the computers ?

Have you given Write permission on the folder (on Win10) where you are trying to copy files from Win 7 ?

Why would moving a file from 10 to a 10 not run into a request for a password? Any file. Copy or move.

I'll take all these into consideration.
