Opening Device Manager/other devices, a display of six unknown devices each marked with colour box and yellow colour "i". I have no recollection as to installing six devices and find no other reference anywhere on the computer. I did check a few weeks ago, several USB sticks, that failed to work but later were able to function. It would be helpful, if some member can cast a light on rectifying this error. Thanks.

You should easily be able to uninstall them with no problems - assuming your other devices are properly identified. That's what I would do making sure to do a "cold" reboot after uninstalling. By "cold" I mean to shutdown Windows then totally power off your computer by pulling the power cord from the wall, or flipping the master power switch on the back of your PSU (if it has one) for about 15 seconds or so. Then connect power, boot and see if they return.

Bill thanks for response. I have tried what you said several times, in the past, as they are all in a separate heading. However they all appear to be reinstalled after restart of computer, except as you suggested a cold "restart" was not carried out. I will certainly try this. A guid new year to you and family.

I sometimes get a popup notice that Windows cannot recognize some USB device. This typically happens after I have connected a memory card, my phone, GPS or some other USB device. This message will appear a couple times a day until I do a "cold" reboot. Then I'm good for months at time.

Bill, tried and find all six now appear but wording changed to [Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller]. All show a box and "yellow letter i". Nothing has been added to the current set up, it could be as said earlier the 6 USB sticks are the cause.

And are you sure you don't have a card reader or other device connected?

Devices are hard drives, USB sticks, mouse, keyboard, Web cam and printer. Checking further the six devices, information for each, is unknown devices. All refer to Intel Serial Bus USB Controller - Intel ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller 2935.2937.2934.2936. 293C. Other than find out what these Devices perform, no other faults appear to affect the computer.

You might try inserting one of those other sticks, then using the safely remove USB device prompt to unmounts it. Otherwise, I would not worry about it. No harm is being done.

Makes no difference, as you say it is only a cosmetic fault. I did try to update Intel ICH9Family USB, but repeats "Fail".

If no additional USB device is connected and you get the error in Device Manager then update the device drivers for the USB controller. If you upgraded to Windows 10 then the old drivers may still be in use. Check the comp manufacturer site for the model chipset drivers or get the drivers directly from Intel.

lj50, thanks for response, tried HP. HP apparently does not cover Windows 10 and in fact HP has done so for sometime, even for Vista 64, certainly not for my computer since 2010. Thanks Bobby.

I have a HP laptop that was built in January 2010 Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit OS. HP hasn't offered any updates for quite a while now for that machine. So I understand what you are talking about.
