Add/Repair programs does not function. I get this error message whenever I
    try and start it.

"Object doesn't support this property or method:

    res://sp3res.dll/default.hta
    Line: 82 "

    Hoping someone can help:-

Take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q265829 and see if their "fix" helps you out.

Note - you will have to copy the entire link (from http to q265829) and paste it or else go to online support and look for article 265829. The [LN] in their URL makes the bbs a little nuts and it insists on ending the URL too soon.

Much thanks for the reply. I will try that, although my problem arose immediately after downloading a trial program called DCE Autoenhance, not Internet explorer.

Well I did try this thanks, but unfortunately it didn't make any difference. It did suggest reinstalling IE6, but when I tried this Windows Update said I already had the most recent version installed, and I can't uninstall it of course because (Catch 22), I can't use Add/Remove programs! :(

Does it open from the command line ??

    rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL appwiz.cpl

    Note : Case sensitive

You might want to expand the original appwiz from your Win CD if it seems like that cpl file is corrupt.

On a side note - this sp3res.dll is new - so maybe something with the program you installed clashing with SP3 ?

    Thanks for the reply.
No it doesn't, same error message.
the program I installed was called DCE Autoenhance, a trial version, which I have now uninstalled using McAfee.
I've emailed the developer and asked, diplomatically, if there might be something in his program (i didn't use the word "bug ") which might have caused the problem. I await his reply.

Have you tried the htc.reg patch on McAfee's website?

Also make sure that content type for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\.hta is application/hta

Well, good news. Thanks Unixfan and everyone who answered.

The McAfee htc.reg fix worked perfectly. Add/Remove Programs now works perfectly.

    Thanks again everyone.

Newt--It may not be the [LN] which disables the link you posted, but rather the fact that the URL contains a semi-colon (;)--two in your case. You have to use vB Code to produce an active link with the full URL when you have a ; in a link on this BBS.

Ah so. Thanks for that information.

Good thing Microsoft hasn't done too many of those redirected topics and no one else seems to have done any.

Edit note - I now don't think it is the ; that causes the problem. The following (which also contains 2 of them) works fine. It does have a major goof though since it says to run scanregw.exe to fix an XP problem.

Newt--Well, I can't argue with success. I am almost sure there was a thread on the semi-colons some time ago, but I cannot find it.

I don't know about the semi colons but I tried the new way to reference KB articles and it worked:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=265829

Unfortunately the kb article explaining the new "languageless" linking method is one of the "problem" type links:
