I just downloaded spybot. I did a scan, and it came up with like 170 spyware issues! Can I go and destroy all of these or will I have a huge problem? How do I know which ones I can delete or clean from my system?

    Delete them all.

Run a second time and delete everything it will let you.

    170 huh!

This computer ought to run better after this.

    hi rgn
    you ask a good question.

personally, i usually delete everything SB turns up, and i've never had any bad effects from doing so. but i have heard others complain that such action has created problems for them.

keep in mind that SB has a recovery feature, and that if properly configured (by default, i believe), all removals are zipped and stored in the SB folder named 'recovery'. when i click on the recovery feature in SB, i am presented with all of the purged processes, and given a checklist of these items to restore, if desired.

to help you learn more, you can also highlight the list of items SB finds, and sometimes there is more explanation. also, the spywares are always listed in red and populate the top of the list, and they come pre-checked.

if you see stuff you really wonder about, you can always post back here on winbbs. and SB has a forum where more specifics can be answered by SB users. the program's author, Patrick M. Kolla posts there under the alias PepiMK.

bottom line, i agree that you can probably safely whack all the items SB found. but since you asked if there might be problems, i thought i'd address that.

    good luck

    :)

I mustard up the guts to run the program. I had 172 problems, and I let it clean the system. I just let it do the ones it check for me. It clean out 112 bad guys!:D :D Everything seems to be working just fine. I'll have to research the other files it has marked.

    wtg, rgn!

pretty soon you'll be purging those files with impunity!

that is why the author named the software Search & Destroy!

The system seems to be running faster! Now, what about the other files, it has detected that aren't checked off? Are they harmless?

to repeat, keep in mind that SB has a recovery feature, and that if properly configured (by default, i believe), all removals are zipped and stored in the SB folder named 'recovery'. when i click on the recovery feature in SB, i am presented with all of the purged processes, and given a checklist of these items to restore, if desired. go ahead and try that, rgn, and have a look at what i'm talking about. that should alleviate a lot of your concerns about maybe removing something you need.

most are history, usage tracks, temp files and such. i suggest you spend some time reading SB's FAQ's, and look over his definitions for things like usage tracks. he has one FAQ listed, "Some of my internet programs stopped to work. What should I do? ", that is very helpful in case you encounter probs.

with a little more time on his site reading about his program, and then some personal experience using the program, i'm sure you'll be fine with SB.

    hope this helps

    :)

no way no how. not on my account, anyway. :)

that's why we're all here. you think you ask a lot, you should follow me around on these forums, here and in newsgroups, etc, and you'll never say that again!

if i sounded impatient when i said, "to repeat... ", i didn't mean for it to sound that way. but sometimes the best thing that can be said has already been said before, and just needs to be pointed out a second time.

asking questions is the way to go, you know that. i see you work in the aerospace industry. i bet you ask a lot of questions in your line of work. i used to program and set up CNC machines. man, i was asking questions all day long!

    :)
