A while back the desktop.ini file began showing up on the desktop screen. I think this happened after I ran a virus scan / general cleanup routine.

When I hover the mouse cursor over it the properties tell me it updates each time I use the computer.

Now there are two of these files.

    Questions -

    1. Where is the proper place for this file to reside? I know it was not there when I bought the unit.

    2. How do I determine which is the correct file? One of them updates regularly and the other is older.

    3. How to get the correct file back to that place without crashing the computer?

    As always, thanks in advance,
    Rick

PS: this is on my laptop computer.

There are 178 on my Win 10 desktop!

Open File Explorer, click on the View tab and then on Options > Change folder and search options.

In Folder Options click on the view tab and check that Hide protected operating files is checked.

When checked the .ini files should not be shown.

This is harmless. At some point in time... well Pete just beat me to it with his "Hide protected operating system files" comment.

Note those files on your desktop can be deleted without causing any problems. I do it all the time. They will probably reappear next time you reboot. I don't mind because I "drill down" into my drives often and I want to see everything. But if you don't just change that option as Pete noted. You can always change it back.
