Can someone please tell me what syntax ? is needed to create a WAN address so that a friend
can access my NAS over the Internet. I know the local and public IP addresses. So how is a WAN
address constructed so that this unit can be seen by others. I've searched and have never found a definitive way
    of creating a address.

Does your NAS has any cloud capability ? It would be the easiest way to give someone over WAN the access.

You could, theoretically, open SMB ports in your firewall but that would be playing with fire.

    Hi R.
Don't think I have Cloud access..This is a old computer that has free nas installed..I just don't want to use FN's addrerss.
Can' I create a address, using what's available in Win 10,sharing, ect..I'm not familiar with SMB but will do some
research. This may be the way to go as the NAS won't be online except to answer a link that I send.
    thanks

    OK..Still working on this..another ? along the same line(Addressing/sharing)
Say I have a folder named "Stuff" on my C drive and have it marked as shared in properties. How (Step By Step) can I give someone access to this folder
over the internet ? (How/What is the address I give them so they may access the file). Not worrying about security at this time..just need to know how
to create a WAN address for a folder/file on my computer.(Note: don't want tos use Cloud/drop box ect).
    Thanks

FTR, I don't recommend this. You should always be concerned and at least a little worried about security - especially when you allow remote access to your computer.

The cloud option is better because if an unauthorized person get access to that, they only have access to those files, not the rest of your computer or other computers on your network.

TeamViewer is the next best option.

Concur with Bill. Allowing anyone access to your computer over internet is dangerous and not recommended.

    Hi All,
I understand the perils..I would still like to know how to create\or what the address would be for a file on my computer named "stuff" that I want a friend to be able to access.
What address would I send him ?..Been fooling around with "one drive" but the address created begins with "file "..I think this would be OK for local net, but not for the internet.
Still, would like to know how to create a address as stated above.
    Thanks

You would have to grant access through your router so I suggest you start with the manual for it.

You cannot give direct WAN access to a shared folder or file on your computer unless the computer is a Web server and the folder/files are in the Web server directory. To give WAN access you must using Windows Remote Desktop or a 3rd party software such as Teamviewer. To use Remote Desktop you must use a fully qualified domain name or the WAN IP address along with an account username and password.

If you have a NAS that is opened to the WAN access must be obtianed using a fully qualified domain name or the WAN IP address. And as most NAS uses port 80 for TCP/IP you will have to change the LISTEN port to something other than port 80 because most all ISPs filter port 80 to prevent residential customers from running WAN servers. You'll have to change the port to something like port 8080 and use router port forwarding to point all 8080 requests to the LAN IP of the NAS. example URL for WAN access: (without the spaces)

    http: // xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx :8080

Syntax = the rules that determine how something is formed, such as the rules for arranging characters in a URL. URL syntax is shown above. HTTP:// Domain name or IP address : Port number /folder or file.
