I get a message in File Explorer that the NAS is not accessible and that I might not have permission to use the network resource. I can access the NAS from my other computers on the same LAN and I can access all other resources on the LAN from this computer.

Evan, I selected Turn Off and did a save. but still had the problem. I went back to check and it was still On. I can't seem to have it stay Off. I also did a Restart after I tried to make the change. I doesn't want to stay Off.

Evan, thanks. I can now turn off password protected sharing, but I still can't access the NAS in File Explorer. BTW, I can access the NAS in a browser by entering the URL assigned by the router. But that only lets me change the settings in the NAS, not the data on the HDDs.

The NAS should have a control panel, accessible from a Web browser, where you must assign permissions to users on the network.

The settings in the control panel haven't changed and I've been using this NAS for several years without a problem. It seems to have started with a recent Win 10 update. It's Win version 1607, build 14393.222.

One more piece of data. I have VMware running Debian on this same computer and the VM can access the NAS files.

Try accessing the NAS by using its IP address in Windows Explorer (file mgr). And verify the firewall is not blocking access.

In researching other another network issue with a win10 update I read that "older" versions of vmware are causing win10 network problems. Try updating the vmware to the latest version, reboot & see if get some joy.

@TonyT, the problem occurs whether or not VMware is even running. When I do run VMware, it is the latest version (12.5). I checks for an update each time I start it.

Some NAS devices use and older version of the NTLM authentication mechanism, so you either have to update the firmware on the NAS, or config WIndows 10 to use a version that is compatible with your device. Google "windows 10 nas ntlm authentication" for some hints on how to proceed.

Finally got it to work. I used the HOMEGROUP trouble shooter. After I did that all worked as expected.
