I have an old (circa 2011) Dell Optiplex 760 desktop PC upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 May 2016. No problems with my sound card at that time despite numerous reports. However yesterday after applying latest Windows Updates (see below) to my Windows 10 OS my sound card no longer works. Device Manager says my driver is the latest one available. Have seen some scattered reports about this but mostly related to first time W10 upgrades.

    Updates applied 9/16/16:
    1. Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3185614)
    2. Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3188128)
    3. Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3150513)

Updates were applied in 2 reboots separated by a few hours on 9/16/16. I suspect it was the last update that disabled my sound card.

I've switched my speakers to the headphone jack as a go around. This is working ok so I have speakers functioning, but what will it take to get my sound card working again? Rolling back the W10 updates doesn't sound like a good idea since MIcrosoft will just try to apply them again on my PC.

    Thanks.

    RESOLVED!

Ran Dell.com hardware checking utility for the sound card, which pointed out the sound default was pointing to the headphone jack instead of the speaker jack in the sound card. The utility went into Control Panel > Sound and displayed the headphone and speaker options. I changed the default and all is well again. Why a Windows Update switched it to headphones I'll never know. I certainly never went into Control Panel > Sound and touched anything yesterday!

Thanks for coming back with your solution. That may be very helpful to others who run into the same problem. :)
