This morning my Lenovo office desktop rebooted after a Malwarebytes scan and locked up with a blue screen on the reboot. I tried rebooting it several times and likewise tried to reboot it into safe mode but with no avail.

I'm at home at the moment but will go back to work later this afternoon and will take my laptop to log in and read this post.

Suggestions for what to look for on the next reboot?

    Thanks in advance,
    Rick

Okay. It boots partially and gives three messages -

    Preparing automatic repair

    Diagnosing your PC

Then, the message header says -

Automatic Repair - Your PC did not start correctly. Press "restart" to restart your PC which can sometimes fix the problem. You can also press "Advanced Options" to try other options to repair your PC.

The restart button appears to be highlighted, but when I press Enter nothing happens. And I cannot I cannot tab over to advanced options to try that approach.

    ???

What happens if you press the Windows Key? Do you have control with Up/Down arrow keys to enable a Shut down?

My keyboard and mouse are wireless and I've plugged in an old keyboard from the office workroom. It does not have a Windows key.

Are you thinking a more up to date wired keyboard might give me access too those buttons?

I have some old keyboards and they all have a Windows key! :( It's the 2nd key on the left bottom of the keypad - sits between Ctrl and Alt ;) If you press that you should be able to navigate the menu with your arrow keys to Shut down the comp. If not, a hard shut down is your only option. (press and hold Power button for more than 4 seconds.) This should be your last resort. Neil.

Roger that. Thanks. I'm just in from work and will take another look at it in the morning.

The data is on a cloud so I'm not worried about losing stuff. But I would like to salvage the unit if possible for the $$ savings and to save the headaches of shopping, set up, etc.

    More tomorrow.

Well, after a half dozen tries I gave up on it. I have access to another unit at work so this one will go onto the shelf to be delved into on a later day.

I did finally get an error message: "K MODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED" whatever that means.

I'll hold the thread open overnight in case there are suggestions on the k mode business.

    Thanks again,

    Rick

Thanks. I've bookmarked that and will follow it up on Monday when I get back to the office.

Well, I read the info at the links and tried several approaches but none of them worked for me. I can't get the boot sequence to interrupt and go into safe mode.

At the moment I'm working 12 to 14 hour days so I'm going to have to move on from this and get back to it after things slow down ... which will be sometime after Labor Day.

Thanks again for the several suggestions. I'll re-read it all and try it again when I get an opening.

In the meanwhile, should I just leave the discussion hanging open, or mark it resolved and reopen it later?

Thanks again to all for the suggestions. I am working ungodly hours and finally, finally got an opening today to spend some time with the unit.

I hooked it up to an old wired keyboard and mouse, removed the wireless adapter, and then booted it with my finger on F8. After it started beeping I let up in the F8 key and it continued to boot. Somebody is going to say "why F8" to which my reply will be "I read someplace that will take it to safe mode and I figured I had nothing to lose. "

It did not boot to safe mode; instead booted straight up with no issues other than the usual W10 notifications about security and such.

After I was sure it was "settled" I plugged the wireless adapter into a USB port and it found my home wifi signal. No problems there.

Then I went to the AVG site and downloaded their removal tool and uninstalled AVG and rebooted when it said reboot. (A friend recently went through a week of torment after AVG watchdog snarled up their unit so I decided to cull it off of this one while I had the chance).

So far it is sitting on the workbench in the carport running with no problems, but I'm still at a bit of a loss to understand exactly what happened. I've turned on Windows Defender and it is running a scan.

Updates is set for automatic so I'm sure it is sniffing out updates that were released between 2 August and today.

Other than that the unit is just idling along.

Is there an event log or other utility that I can run and post for diagnostic purposes?

So to follow up on yesterday's post; the unit seems to have healed itself after sitting in the carport for almost two months.

My suspicion is that removing the wireless adapters for wifi and the keyboard & mouse had something to do with the successful reboot.

It has since installed all updates and I've run a virus scan. So no problems from that angle.

At any rate, I'm going to declare it fixed.

Thanks again for everyone's patience in getting to the end of this.

    Rick
