I am facing a predicament, require to re-install Windows 7, unable to do so as DVDrom player [E] is not showing under Computer. DVDrom is a HLDS GH40L appears removed after the last monthly Windows Updates were installed. At present a clean reinstall is not possible.

Try going into Device Manager Uninstall the drivers then on the menu bar click on Action then click on Scan for hardware changes. If it still doesn't recognize the drive you may have to restart your machine. Why do you feel you the need to reinstall the OS?

lj50 thanks for response. In Device Manager, there are no references to DVD-Rom or do you mean all other entries? Reason to reinstall OS, there are several other errors propping up and freeze of the monitor screen. Clicking "Action" it pops up "Help ".

In Device Manager there is no recognition of DVDRom, except when lj50 suggestion is carried out, then DVDRom is shown. Reference DVD/CD also shown in Computer and DVD Video is inserted, it displays contents of DVD, but will not play the content there in. BIOS shows reference as second choice. However, at each cold start of computer all above information reverts back to DVDRom not shown in Device Manager or computer as "E" drive. View> Hidden Devices, not show any reference to DVDRom. Apparently it appears all information inserted is not being retained for future use by cold restart of computer.

Did you try opening up the case, unplugging the drive then plugging back in. There could be a possibility that the DVD drive may be starting to fail. I had a problem similar to yours. I got a Memorex DVD burner for my old machine. I would get the machine to recognize the burner until the machine was rebooted then it wasn't recognized. I finally got it to be permanently recognized by making the Memorex DVD burner the Master and the DVD player the Slave.

It may well be worth checking the connections as you suggest, but owing to the mass of wires connected on the outside makes me quince. Thanks for the interest shown. Bobby.

First create a restore point. Start/Orb/Run/regedit click ok. H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E95-e325-11CE-bfc1-08002BE10318}. Highlight the Key. Go to the right pane and delete Upper Filter and Lower Filter then restart your machine

The step you mentioned was carried out when I read it from Microsoft help site. In my case, there was no Upper Filter but only Lower Filter which was deleted and computer restarted. A backup of a previous save when DVDRom was current, did not correct the issue. Is there no other way to return computer to an earlier time?
I carried out a check of the computers inners and all connections appeared to be sound. A fair amount of dust collected by the fans was removed and certainly computer running much quieter.

Bought in 2009. If this be the case not worth replacing or hassle in fitting.

I am completely new to the field of DVD/CDs drives and therefore much help is require here. Are DVD/CD players of common standard size? or the make of computer determines the correct model? Model currently fitted has symbols, which are very hard to make out --- [Compact Disc Rewritable] [Multi RDL] [Light Scripter].

They're pretty much a standard size. I installed a Plextor DVD/R RW into a HP Pavilion Media Center m7520n Desktop PC without any problems. You shouldn't have any difficulties or you could wait and see if any other members have any suggestions.

To be honest the DVD?CD is the original drive that came with the HP Presario, has at times caused concern and this current fault was eminent a few years back. Unfortunately, notes were not taken as to the solution. Am I correct that the drive is easily removed from the bracket, but removing the two cables (one being a sturdy red cable, instead of normal ribbon type). I have always found your suggestions in the past, solving my problems, thank you.

As I am made to believe, that restoring computer to an earlier time when the DVD/CD functioned satisfactory, this would be the case but not this time. A Registry entry being deleted or changed, are the changes permanent or a Restore also change Registry to the date before changes were made? I note that a new DVD/CD Rom, retail at £60 plus, is a gamble to change as Windows could be at fault, though the fitted DVD/CD is recognised but fails to open inserted DVD/CD. At each cold start, steps taken have to be repeated.

No satisfactory solution to this problem is found, but thanks to members who kindly tried to do so. Bobby.

Forced to change over to Windows 10, now DVD/CD showing under Computers and Device Manager shows DVD/CD working properly. However, inserting a Video shows contents information, but fails to play Video DVD.
