i am running Tauscan anti-trojan tool on two machines on a trial basis. i have successfully scanned both machines several times, however today i encountered problems on my winxp pc.

the scan stopped on a .dll file in the I386 folder, two separate times (i tried a reboot and rescan and it replicated the behavior).

the file that terminated tauscan each time was C:\I386\MSVBVM50.DLL

i was ultimately able to run the scan successfully when i unchecked "All Files" under file types and selected the recommended "Smart Mask ".

two errors appeared when the scans were terminated. they were....

a MS Visual C++ Runtime Library error message that said: " Runtime
Error! Program: C:\PROGRA~1\Agnitum\TAUSCA~1.6\Tauscan.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
    "

    and

a Tauscan.exe Application Error message saying: "The instruction at "0x73dd1351" referenced memory at "0x00000004 ". The memory could not be "read ". Click on OK to terminate the program. "

any insights as to why this happened, if there is anything "wrong" with the file, and what i can do to get past this point while using the "All Files" option will be appreciated! i should add that i am pretty sure i ran the scan this way once before with no prob. but tonight, it terminated two times.

i plan to also email this question to tauscan tech support, but based on the attention (i should say lack thereof) that they are giving an inquiry of mine made to them on 1/4/03 about polymorphic trojans, i think my best bet is to appeal to anyone here on the winbbs forums who can help me. maybe some Tauscan users?

    thank you

    :)

i solved the agnitum tauscan problem...

after not hearing from their tech support and not receiving any input from their forum, i uninstalled the free trial program.

that fixed things right up!! <g>

i then installed trojanhunter, and i couldn't be happier so far. i'm getting my questions answered and the program detects things that tauscan does not, the gui is better, imo, and the scan flat flies. additionally, trojanhunter detects polymorphic trojans, whereas tauscan doesn't.

thought i'd post back on this in case anyone had gotten curious.

    :)

to be fair, or at least accurate <g> i should note that i received a response from tauscan support yesterday...

so it took them 5 days to reply to a (trial) user who wrote to tell them that the scans were not completing. that's a long time to be without the use of a trial product, and not a very good impression on the trial user, needless to say.

they pretty much level with you from the get-go when their bot responds to a user's request for help...

"Thank you for your request. If you are a registered user, you will get a response shortly. If you use a trial or free version of our software, then one of our engineers will send you an answer as soon as he or she is available. "

and i'll never know if their suggestion would have worked, cause as i said, the software is off my computer.

really though, their "suggestion" was just another question... the kind you answer yes or no to and wait another five days for their next utterance.

    :)
