Is the size of space used on your boot drive increasing because of all the Windows 10 builds?

I have ordered a new laptop with Windows 10 pro 64 bit, 8gb of memory and only one hard drive, which is a 256gb SSD. I like to partition my disk so I can keep all user data off the boot drive. So my question is, are the new builds and windows updates eating up more space? Every month another xxx gb of used space? If I partition the drive then it can be a real painful task to add more space to C while you have other partitions with data immediately following the boot partition, so I want to size C, the boot drive, large enough for future growth. But how much larger? Is there a rule of thumb for that?

I just ordered this laptop and I can not tell you how much space is currently used until I get the laptop and I expect it will have some amount of bloatware that needs to be cleaned out also.

Hi Gordon. You can keep your Windows system disk space in check by running disk cleanup and selecting the Windows Update Cleanup option as described here, How to Reduce the Size of Your WinSXS Folder on Windows.

As far as how big to make the system partition, the system requirements for Windows 10 call for 20 GB's at the minimum so to be on the safe side I would go with 60 GB's which will ensure that you will not run out of room on your system partition.

You can also run programs like CCleaner to remove temporary files and other junk that accumulates on Windows systems over time.

Since its a new computer, if you need help with figuring out what bloatware programs to remove, let me know and I would be happy to assist you with removing junk programs that you don't need installed.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I will take you up on that kind offer to help me clean up the bloatware. The manufactures put that stuff on the PC and the user scratches his/her head wondering what it is and do I need it.

Ok then. Once you have access to the laptop, open Control Panel< Uninstall a program and post a screenshot of all the installed programs here in your next reply.

Evan, My laptop arrived yesterday. Out of the box drive C showed space used 13.9GB. I finally got windows 10 update to work today and when it was finished drive C showed space used 17.8GB. So it looks like the user is going to have to do the clean up thing on a regular schedule.

As to bloatware, there does not appear to be any from the manufacture. This was a refurnished Lenovo thinkpad and the folks that did the refurb cleaned it out. If I get this right you can see my screen shot below. There are a lot of Windows features that I will never use so I plan to uninstall them as I get time to figure out what I don't want.

Thank you for the help. Gordon

Hi Gordon, Just looking in and I would not remove the programs shown on your screen shot. FWIW my HP notebook has a 250GB SSD and shows 50GB's used and run everything on it. Neil.

There is no bloatware on that laptop which is great. As for Windows Features, refer to step #2 in my optimizing Windows 10 tutorial at the top of the Windows 10 forum for which Windows Features you can safely remove.
