My main data storage folder has suddenly disappeared! & I am at a loss of how to get it back. I use Carbonite to back up my files but it can't find them either. Has anybody else ran into this & if so how can I recover my data?

Hi DPI Graphics. If Carbonite doesn't have a backup of that data, then you can try using Recuva and see if you can successfully restore the data that is missing from your hard drive.

I have tried to run Recuva with the deep scan & it is taking forever to run. It is only on 37% of step 2 of 3 & estimates 9 more hrs to complete. Is that OK? or should I cancel it out? OOPs 38%
    Thanks DPI

Windows 10 has a bad habit of uninstalling some of your 3rd party applications especially if it was updating to a newer build of the operating system.

If you want to still use Windows 10 then you will need to reinstall the programs that the update uninstalled.

Were you able to recover your lost data?

I still don't have all of my data back. I am missing HUNDREDS of picture files + I don't know how many .CDR files out of Corel. Ihad them in C: & not on my desktop.
I didn't know that win10 will just dump them & Carbonite doesn't check the files if they are on c: I believe that those files are still on that drive, I just don't know how to address them.

Well unfortunately there isn't much else I can suggest, other than using a professional data recovery service to hopefully recover your lost data. Those services can be quite expensive so if you are willing to spend several hundred dollars to try and get your data recovered then that might be the only route that's viable at this point.

If you did an upgrade to versions of windows you may have a hidden folder on C called windows.old. If so, it's possible that files from the user accounts in earlier versions of windows may be somewhere in the windows.old folder if it exists.

It was "just" an update. Most of my data files were in a folder called "C:FTP" with a shortcut on the desktop. After the update, when I started my PC back up, when I clicked on the shortcut, it said that the file had been moved. The problem is that I don't know where it got moved to. If I knew that I could probably get it back.

Did you try performing a search.

    I HATE THE NEW SEARCH!!!
I have tried but no luck. Unfortunately, I used the nae "FTP" so it takes me to all kinds of ftp stuff.
I was wondering if a defrag of the C drive would maybe readdress the folder/files.

Defragmenting the drive will make the situation worse and wouldn't make recovering those files any easier. Have you tried searching for any of the individual documents by name to see if they possibly got moved somewhere else on the drive?
