On Windows 98SE I used Tiny Personal Firewall (TPF) version 2, which was still freeware, as an alternative to ZoneAlarm.

Now I have upgraded to Windows XP, I need a similar firewall, i.e. one that blocks outgoing transmissions based on program or transport type.

Any suggestions, specifically for XP Pro.

Or am I missing something and this can be done with the built-in firewall for XP ?

XP's built in firewall only stops incoming, not outgoing.
Check out Sygate, it's also free, although more techy than Zonealarm, which also works well.

And my understanding of the XP firewall is ports only. No ability to examine the packets for content.

I reccomend ZoneAlarm but ver 2.6 not 3.0.

They tried to get fancy in 3.0, has some problems.

2.6 is solid works with all versions of windows.

I have used Tiny and Black Ice. Have been to clients and set up Norton and Mcaffee and still provide support for them.

Still I like ZA 2.6. If you are behind a router anyway, you still should use a SW fire wall specifically a two way and in this config you will be well covered.
