I purchased a small laptop for travel 2 months ago and when I opened it this morning it said "Your passwod has expired. To change your password, sign in with a password instead of a PIN." So even the password will not let me in. Is there some trick to this or am I just wacked?

Your password has expired so to change it, sign in with a password???

    That makes no sense.

You didn't tell us anything about this notebook (brand, model, Apple MacBook, Chromebook, Linux, Windows 7, Windows 10, Windows NT) so I have no clue what to suggest. That said, according to the Terms and Rules of this site you agreed to when you joined, see Rule 5 where it says, "...we can't help you" and note the asterisk leading to the following statement,
    Sorry.

Sounds like a Win 10 machine that has a regular login password and the fancy new MS signin thingie that uses a PIN for a password.

I've never seen that specific error. I do use a PIN myself, but with an MS account. If the local password needs to be changed and you have forgot what it is and don't made a password recovery disk, you're going to have to use some 3rd party tools you'll have to find through a web search.

Yes Steve this was a born on date of Dec 2015. I actually purchased it used from a pawn shop who had factory reset the laptop themselves with no password.

Arie, When I got it I actually did set up a password but not with a Microsoft account.

So our involvement ends here. You're going to have to use some 3rd party tools you'll have to find through a web search.

Wow I'm really impressed now. After reset and failure half way thru lilpurp is now stuck in a endless boot loop.

After being told this feature was removed from Win 10 Home (note Local Users and Groups was removed from Computer Management.) I seem to be the only one with this expiration problem. Numerous attempts at recovery reset always failing at 54%. Success after a fresh install and gain some space back. F11 @ boot will get you in a HP recovery FYI.

Password expiry is normally set on the active directory of a company domain and would require Win10 Pro AFAIK.
