Hi Mark: and a HNY to you as well. Yes we can get the Intelligent update, but I use NAV LiveUpdate in the Express mode so my wife can do the update with one click of the mouse if I am away from home for a few days. Saves a lot of explaining (I am not too patient, neither is she) when trying to show her how to do the updating. :D

you're trading off explaining for current, up to the minute protection. but you know that, right?

liveupdate shows no new virus defs for today, yet as i post this message, i am running a scan with new defs obtained moments ago via intelligent updater.

    :)

Yes, I am aware of the time lag. Thanks. So far haven't had problems, but you never know. Now that I am home most of the time (retired) I probably SHOULD use the Intelligent Updater!!!:D

    To Brett & Mark:

Believe it or not Intelligent Updater is available in Canada!!!:D

I just don't use it often because what isn't available in my part of Canada is ADSL or Cable connection. I am stuck with a 56K phone line and the 3.52MB+- IU file takes anywhere up to 10 min. to download, if I don't get disconnected.

Oh and by the way, I also don't have door to door postal service, I get my water from a well, and flush the porcelin bowl into a septic tank. Other than that life here is pretty good, 3 acres, no close neighbours, 15 min drive to town and NO TRAFFIC jams.:D

Eat your heart out, you guy's in the big city!!!

    amazing what spybot picks up

It is rather amazing what Spybot picks up that does not even
    register with ad-aware.
Also the descriptions of services and what they are up to is very illuminating.
    Excellent product

It is because SpyBot does more than Spy/Adware.

The items you speak of are privacy/security issues and usage tracking related to windows.

Additionally in settings-file sets there is a selection for System internals that is a basic registry cleaner. This has to be selected as it is not a default.

ADaware even with its current update issues was never designed to do the usage/security or general registry cleaning. It is purely for spy/adware.

    hi john
i've often wondered why the nav intelligent updater file size is so large when compared to the liveupdate file size.

I have no idea why the IU file is larger??? Maybe the LiveUpdate just appends to the existing NAV files and IU overwrites and replaces?? I know if I run the System File Checker after downloading either from IU or LU it shows a whole bunch of NAV files as having been replaced regardless of which download I used. I'm sure Norton would have the answer if one was to go asking. (If you could get a response!!!):)

oh man, you're talking about setting oneself up for mass quantities of pain, aggravation and abuse....

asking a simple, clear and concise question on the symantec support forums just about automatically ensures you of a response that has no correlation to the question posed.

i speak from quite a lot of experience in that department! :)

but you've piqued my curiosity now, john, so if no one else does, i will post that question.

wish me well, and if you do not see me or hear from me for a month, you'll know i am busy re-asking and re-re-asking the same question over there.

    :)

Good luck on your quest. If you do not show up in the next 30 days, shall send out the bloodhounds (poodles?) to try and find you.

I await your answer with a worm on my tongue and baited breath.:D

okay, i fired off the file size question to symantec just now.

looks like they may have instituted a new format, possibly having done away with the online Q&A forum? i was asked for account ID#, which i provided to them, but i have never been asked for that previously. they also had a more specific personal info submission form than any i remembered from just a few months ago. if they are experiencing extreme overload (they always claim to be), it makes sense to shift into an environment where only licensed users are being attended to.

so here's my question for them:

"why are the intelligent updater definition files so much larger than the liveupdate files? i retrieve the iu files daily, and they are about 3.5mb each day.

the lu files, retrieved weekly (approximately) are much, much smaller.

    please explain that for me?

    thank you and kind regards,

    mark "

that ought to be good for about a 4-5 day wait and an answer that makes no sense.... he remarked with great skepticism.

    i'll let ya know!

    :)

i just asked this question (why are nav iu file sizes so much bigger than nav lu file sizes?) over on the grc.com newsgroups and received a logical answer...

"The larger one is an .exe which installs the definitions. The smaller one connects to the definitation database remotely and installs them from there. "

so if i haven't run the executable from its online location to install the defs, but instead have chosen to download the file to disk and install from there, i imagine it's okay to delete the .exe file afterwards.

    sound right?

    :)

Yes it is OK to delete the IU exe file once it has been run. I read it somewhere on the Symantec site but can't put my finger on it now.

BTW, the LU download today was 284.3 KB and the IU was 3.53 MB. I chose the LU for obvious reasons.:D
